Getting rid of unregistered 4WD?

Hello.

I just wanted some advice on how to recoup as much money as possible…

I am in Sydney. I have a 2003 Hyundai Terracan that has a faulty motor & faulty fuel pump. It cost me $5,000 about 2 years ago. (It is a rubbish car and I would never buy a Hyundai again.)

To fix it requires a secondhand motor, which I can only locate in Melbourne, and costs $3000 WITHOUT Shipping.

I do not want to spend any more money on it.

I have no space to put it as I have an apartment with no parking spots. It is currently sitting (unregistered) outside in the street.

What do you suggest I do with it?

I cannot get any kind of Insurance on it, as it Unregistered & all Insurance requires it to be Registered. And I cannot get it Registered as the engine wont start and the fuel pump is broken. So please don't suggest some kind of dodgy Insurance fraud.

I want to get rid of it legally, for however long it takes, but maximize my cash.

Options I have heard are getting $150 from a Wrecker for it.

Any other suggestions to make as much money as possible from it?

    Put it on eBay.

I had a 2000 Holden Commodore that had a siezed engine, expired rego, needed to be towed.
I got $750 for it 2 years ago.

Wreckers are hopless and some will even want you to pay them to take it off your hand. Same goes with those ads saying 'old cars removed'.

If it's not in too bad shape you may be surprised what you get for it…

    • Nice! Thank you. I will do exactly as you said.

Does CarSales/etc sites have a similar section for 'Unregistered Tow-truck Moveable Cars'? What's the correct category name for this?

    • I second this.

Alone as scrap value, its probably worth at least 500 - 750 bucks in scrap steel itself.

However, if its in decent condition, externally and the interior, might be worth more to the right person. Doesn't hurt (financially) to put it on gumtree and go on from there!

  • Put it on ebay 99c reserve

Can put it on gumtree also… free !! :-)
    Someone will want it.

    • As long as they pay for it and pick it up, and it's more than the wrecker's $150, I am willing to go for it.

      But not under $150.

  • Release the Handbrake, put the gear on Neutral and push it into a lake?

    • How do I get more than $150 from it?

Please stick to the topic, people.

I am trying to get as much MONEY as I can from it.

Release the Handbrake, put the gear in Neutral, set it on fire and push it off a cliff. Film it, put it on youtube. PROFIT!!!!

      • Put it on gumtree for $250

  • eBay no reserve auction will see it gone quickly.
Remember if you can't find parts cheap then it will be worth money to wreckers/others in your shoes.
I think you will be surprised it will sell well.
Obviously take lots and lots of pics and describe it really thoroughly.

yep, take pictures of the panels including the lighting panels. Might be worth putting all the closeups in a separate imgur album.

  • This is a repost of my reply to a similar question on a similar thread:

The first thing I'd do is call a wrecker that specialises in Toyotas Hyundais specifically or Japanese Korean cars in general. While they probably won't be interested in the whole car if the engine is busted (as was the case for my X-Trail), they were happy to keep my details which they then passed on to a mechanic who was looking for a similar aged model. I'd just sold it when I ended up getting a reasonable offer via this route.

Also, a scrap sale will probably get you $200-$250 at the most, but you might be able to advertise some of the high value items for as much as this on scumtree (think seats, ECU, stereo if a nonstandard size, anything that breaks regularly on this model) for more than the net reduction in scrap price. Some items won't decrease your scrap sale or trade in value at all (eg. floor mats, roof racks, towbar) and can either be sold or given to friends, while other items might be worth swapping for a crappier version from a friend's/Gumtree customer's car (eg. good condition wheels/tyres, new battery) so that at least they get a minor upgrade.

Finally, it doesn't sound like you really can afford to get rid of this for free. If I'm wrong on this count, you might consider donating it to a local firefighter or SES unit. They can only train for road rescue by cutting real vehicles apart, and at least you know that the car is being put to a good community use.

I also was in a similar situation (outlined here) with an apartment's space constraints. I ended up selling it for $500 unregistered to someone who did the repairs themselves.

  • Did you get a result?

  • contact a local car wreckers, they will pay you top cash. Car wreckers usually buy all types of vehicles in any condition and pay top cash.
