Even $85 is a lot for a kettle.

    • +1

Not many that can do different temperatures, cheaper then this

      • +11

What else do u use a kettle for, other than boiling water to 100 degrees?
        (Non trolling question)

        • +2

Some teas need water to be at certain temperature for it to be nice?

        • +2

some people like tea at not quite boiling.
plunger coffee should be less than boiling.
i remember seeing one that had different temps labled for white tea , black tea etc.

not that I would bother but that is the reasons why.

        • +10

If you brew certain teas like matcha (fine powdered form of green tea) it needs water between 70-80 degree c. Learnt this the hard way when I wasted about $8 dollars worth of expensive matcha by burning it with 100 degree water.

TLDR there's more to tea brewing than just dunking a teabag into a cup of hot water.

        • +2

Heating up Baby's bottle, old kettle would go as low as 40 degrees, so was perfect for it. It even had different colour led lights based on the temp inside

Unfortunately cant find the model anymore.

    • +3

It has lots of buttons and a blue light.

  • +3

Says limited stock in that old catalogue and not showing up online so good luck finding one.

    • +2

      No deal then.

    • Have you checked in store?

      • +1

Have you? I wasn't going to be a nark but really this post deserves it given the obvious. If I'm not mistaken, one of the requirements of a deal is that there is reasonable stock. Pulling a (very good) price from a pre-Xmas catalogue which stated from the outset "limited stock" doesn't constitute a bargain.

        • Starts 26 Dec 2014 - Ends 26 Jan. Nothing about no rainchecks either so the store should give you at that price when they get more stock back in if out of stock

        • @asa79: so have you checked that's the case?

  • +4

If I want temp control, I will flick the switch when my awesome judgement skills kick in and tell me my water is at the desired temperature..

    • +9

For those of us without awesome skills, one day someone will invent a column of fluid that expands according to temperature and will even have a scale to read… Until that day, we are either pleb or resort to buying these magical kettles

  • +3

I have this kettle and the matching 2 slice toaster. The buttons have worn off both in the first 3 months and it has been like pulling teeth to get them replaced.

Unfortunately i got them direct from the distributor, Sheldon & Hammond. Their latest request is that i cut the cords off both and send them the photos. What a brilliant idea considering they still work and they are used every day.

The lure of a cheap price sometimes doesn't pay dividends….

    • +6

      Photoshop

    • +4

Sheldon & Hammond has really good warranty, they replaced my knives when they went blunt.
Most likely the reason why they said cut the cords is because they want to make sure you aren't going to use them again.

They will just send you new ones through the mail.

Best idea if you want to get it replaced, is cut the cord extremely near the plug, take a photo. Then get a replaceable plug and wire it back so you can use it again!…..

Not sure why you are refusing to do so if it means you get a new one in return. Do what they say and you will be rewarded with a new one in the mail.

      • I would be happy to cut off cords if S&H could give an accurate time frame when replacements would arrive….which they couldn't.

In any rate I rang the local branch today and they exchanged them…..with minimal fuss…..on the spot….HAPPY DAZE…. :-)

    • -2

      Whut…?

      Why?!

I can't think of any good reason why they'd want you to do something like that. Did they explain their request?

      • +3

I think it's so that you're not pulling a dodgy to get an extra kettle.
This way they don't have to waste storage space from you sending it in, labour for having someone to look at it and cost from reimbursing postage inbound - all that just to say 'yup you kettle is stuffed'. Have you cut the cord should be enough deterrent for dodgy pullers.

        • +7

…but it leaves you without a kettle while waiting for the new one….. Proper customer service does not assume the customer is a criminal trying to get a second free kettle….

        • +5

          @Pobman:
I think it probably sounds worse than it really is since for most people the kettle would be dead when they request a replacement and that if they are too send in their unit, they are also without a working unit. So at the end of the day there's no difference between scenarios. Its just a shame that a units that's still working has to be artificially disabled. But then again perception is reality.

        • +3

Thanks all - appreciate the explanation / speculation.

(Not sure why I got downvoted for asking a genuine question - which seems to happen quite a bit on OZB. Seriously people…)

      • +1

No explanation. I did offer to deliver the units myself to the local branch for a swap. Didn't get a response with that either.

    • +1

Their latest request is that i cut the cords off both and send them the photos.

lol sounds like a Hollywood ransom threat, only backwards.

"cut their cords and send photographic proof, or you don't get the money!"

(except the money is the replacement kettle/toaster) :P

    • I've had mine for over 2.5 years, and like you I'm one of the reviewers for this product…

I haven't had any problems with the buttons and it's still going strong. Maybe I was just lucky or maybe you were unlucky. Hard to tell, but I still like my kettle :-)

  • +1

I have this kettle, and it is excellent if you ever make tea or coffee and need water at a temperature other than 100C. Most expensive kettle I've ever owned, but also the best.

It's normally over $100 from kitchenware discounters. It's a steal at $84.50 from Myer!

The Sweethome calls it the best electric kettle: http://thesweethome.com/reviews/the-best-home-kettle/

  • Best kettle I have ever had too. Good price for this particular kettle - I paid about $30 more two years back. Still going strong.

    • +1

      how are the buttons?

      • +2

        Rectangular

  • +1

The buttons have worn but are still decipherable on mine. But hasn't been an issue for me.

  • +1

Not a bad price, I got my breville smart kettle at a steal for around $50 about 5 years ago, still going strong.

    • My smart kettle cost $85 about 4 years ago, and it's also still boiling away. For the record, I use the green tea setting more than half the time. So, yeah, those of us with these kettles that have more than on, off, and keep warm settings do use the extra settings and do think our tea tastes better as a result.

      • and it's also still boiling away

I can hear it from here it's so loud…

  • Best kettle I have owned too. (1.5yrs)

    Good:
+ Different temperatures (great for tea)
+ Lights make it look good and everyone comments on it. (makes the kitchen look high tech)

    Bad:
    - The 'Keep Warm' button is great in theory but I never really use it. If the kettle is left off its base for a while, it will forget its setting and revert to enabling 'Keep Warm' the next time you use it.
When you have a forgetful housemate it sucks… They will forget to switch this off and the water will boil when they have gone to sleep….and you end up grabbing your bat wondering who came in to make tea.
    - Buttons do wear out rather quick (my '100 black' and 'Start' button text has disappeared - next time I will laminate them or something like that?..).

    • +4

      and everyone comments on it.

That means your guests are bored.

      • Okay, first jv comment I've actually laughed at.

    • Has 2 minute memory of base.

  • as with all the other opinions, yes this is a great kettle

had it for about a year now after upgrading from a Breville Smart Kettle (which was also brilliant except for the design fault for how the plastic knuckle guard was attached)

  • +1

If boiling around 1.5 Liters or more, i can measure with a $5 meat thermometer put through a hole drilled into the lid my normal kettle.
After a while, you get used to the rumblings of 70-80 degrees.

    • Does it keep warm at that temp tho

    • I don't drink coffee I want a kettle. Pays to put more mental effort into logical thinking

  • +1

So has anyone actually had any luck getting it from Myer?

    • +1

I tried Northlands and Melbourne CBD stores a couple off weeks ago.
There was one display model in each store, but as the writing was gone from
some of the buttons from people handling it, I decided against it.
Reviews on it are not great also.
I did get the toaster which was also 50% off and really like it.

    • For anyone interested, I did pick one up from Myer in Brisbane City today. They have ONE left.

  • +1

That button placement though….every time you pick it up your thumb presses on the buttons, hence the wear and tear on them. its been 50% for about 2 weeks too

  • +1

For a cheapo version of this, Target's http://www.target.com.au/p/modern-living-variable-temperatur… is not too bad for $20. Was on sale for $17 a while ago.
