Hi I installed Windows 8.1 on our PC last year. Was working fine until two days ago when computer updated then said there was an error & I need to do a reinstall. I cannot find the box that had the product key number. Spoke to Microsoft & they couldn't help. Spoke to Dick Smith where I bought the product from & they can't help either. Can't access computer at all. Can someone help pls?

As Shaw said, you can try re installing or repairing windows with the original CD, otherwise, you will have to buy another licence. Once you have repaired the pc, use a tool to show you the product key of your Windows and save it for later. There are lots of tools over the internet which you can use to see the product key.
are you absolutely sure you need to reinstall the OS?
do you still have the product code of your previous OS?
are you able to boot up in safe mode? If you can then you can retrieve the Product Key from the Windows registry:-

If you want to recover a key from a dead computer, you can hook up the hard drive to a working PC, and then run ProduKey and use File -> Select Source to point to the external Windows directory. You can then grab the keys from that computer easily.

Can you system restore? Got a recovery partition?
If you do a reinstall, and it is using a pre-programmed key, then you will be sweet. If there isn't one on the chassis, then this is likely the case. Unless ofcorse you purchased it separately, then you'll just have to find the box.
