What Car Paint Protection? (Sydney)

Hello,
I just bought a new car, Subaru Forester in dark grey and I want to do paint protection on it while the paint is still new. I would like to hear from people who had it applied by detailers, not dealers.
How long did it last you? What’s the reasonable cost? Should I treat the alloy wheels as well? Do you know any good detailers in Sydney?

What product would you recommend?
The dealer was selling me “Protech” but I don’t trust it – any experiences?
I am inclining to go with “Ceramic Pro” or “Opticoat”
The claim is that it will last 5 to 6 years. No special shampoo or maintenance is required.
It takes 2.5 hours to apply by a detailer.

My reasons for paint protection:
1. Easy to clean – I want to be able minimise the amount of time that it takes to wash the car, ultimately just to be able to wash it with a hose with no shampoo and scrubbing involved
2. I want it to be shiny without needing to wax.

Either one should do the trick.

IIRC both of them need an annual top up to maintain the warranty. Check with the applicator/detailer.

Not really an issue when you're considering these sort of protection, chances are you hate swirl and holograms so an annual detail regime might not be a bad idea.

  • cars these days need after market paint treatment?!

    • Not really. I think it will be much more easier to clean and will always look like it has been recently waxed - please correct me if I am wrong

      • you're wrong

cheaper to get the thing professionally detailed every six months or so

        • how much would getting that done cost?

  • I have recently brought new nissan Xtrial.

I am also considering doing paint protection. Any recommendation in Melbourne?

    • I'm planning on doing mine here.

Asked around and they seem to have a pretty good reputation.

      • How did you go with them? Just got a new car, was thinking of getting it done with them too?

  • +1

its a con, most modern cars have a clear coat lacquer on top of the paint, wash it regularly and polish periodically and the car will look as good as new

  • Subaru paint is fairly soft compared to other makers from my experience.
Wouldn't hurt to get some form of clear coat.

    • You mean an additional protection on top of the soft clear coat?

      • Yup.

Frequent 2 minute hose downs with water will remove loose dust. If you are short of time and don't mind risking some damage to your paint and trims then use a pressure hose.

A professional polish will make the clear coat layer shine. Wax is even better.

From how I read your post you are primarily concerned about minimal effort for keeping a shiny looking car. Since this is OzBargain I'd recommend the cheapest option would probably be to phone around with all the car detailers to ask them if they have any plans available. They might have something that suits your needs for regular car waxing + car wash.

Lots of owners hate having to wash their cars and use those car wash businesses located in most Westfield carparks where you can leave your car while you shop. Perhaps these could meet your needs.

  • has anyone done paint protection in "Western Sydney Detailing" they are in facebook. Had a chat with them few weeks back for my new WRX and the quote was $599 just for the exterior paint protection(Not sure what will they do for interior ) and they use a product called Wolf's NQ hardbody paint protection. Anyone who had done this before and how are the results ? need some opinion.

    Thanks
