    • What's a good bang for your buck for plex. I currently have a netgear rnd 2000 and it doesn't support plex. Wanting to upgrade on the cheaper side seeing I already have the drives

      • I have an RNDU2000 and it supports Plex (no transcoding, but I want my 1080p tablet/phone/media player to get the original source quality anyway)

The document linked here, has a list of NAS's that support Plex in various ways

        https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/201373803-NAS-Comp…

I did a StaticIce search for all the models that support 1080p transcoding.
I found one model for around $600 (sorry cannot remember which one), several for around $1,000, and some were up above $3,000.

Or you could build an i3/i5 NAS yourself for a few hundred.
        Check this out: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2295866

        12TB i3 NAS for $960
        http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=wish_lists&wlc…

        • Hey thanks for all the info appreciated cheers i will double check my model but have tried to install plex and its not available

        • @Regie69:
I think the U model has a different (Intel) CPU so that might be why it works.
If you look at that Plex NAS document linked above, concentrate on the 1080p transcoding ones (which reduces it down to maybe 15 models) and then look for their model numbers on StaticIce.com.au you should find that $600 NAS (assuming you already have disks to throw in there - and if it fits your budget).

Otherwise, you could look at the replacement for my model, which is the ReadyNAS 312, but thats $299 (my older RNDu2000 cost me $150 I think) and for not much more you can get a more powerful NAS like some of the other suggestions in this thread.

Building one yourself from an HP Microserver or NUC (Celeron or i3/i5) seems popular and while a little more effort, gives great performance.

The i3 12TB NAS linked above seems decent, if you need the disks as well. Plenty of free NAS software/boot images out there.

Looks like good specs, dual power/usb3/ethernet until reading the below statement on their latest FW, I'd buy something else personally:

"Effective with this firmware update, the Network File System (NFS) feature will not be available or supported."

    • Thanks for that piece of info. I won't be buying one now.

  • how is this compare with synology, does the DSM5.1 worth the extra $$$$?

    • There is a saying "You get what you pay for" and its still true, yes the extra cash is well worth it for Synology DSM5.1, having used QNAP brand before, Synology is more value to for money.

I run a HP n36l microserver with xpeanology (so I run the synology 5.1 dsm), cost me under $300 max pre disks, and it's awesome, synology on a budget (equivalent synology box would have cost me $1100-$1500). Used to have a synology 4 Bay so can make the comparison with confidence.

  • Lenovo also has a 4bay NAS on sale in Shopping Express, but ending soon:

    http://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/buy/lenovo-iomega-ix4-300d…

How is that compare with this one ?

  • Asustor make really good NAS's as well. Bit cheaper than synology.

    • Cheaper, but doesn't mean it better values for money, for example, Synology or QNAP provide regular system update, and has more features out of the box.

      • More updates yes. More features? I don't think so?(could be wrong). I have had the 2 bay asustor for about 8 months and it hasn't skipped at beat. But you'll save about 20% or more in price for a very similar unit when comparing to synology.

Who else read the title besides me as "Dickless" be honest! First glance can be so deceptive!

    • you need to get laid…

    • No, but as someone in the IT industry gunning for that next big promotion the mention of cloud got me turgid. Cloud!

    • Technically correct… to borrow a line from Ghostbusters:
"Yes, it's true. This NAS has no dick."
