Laptop's Power Supply Unit or Motherboard

Hi guys.

I do not know if this topic has already been posted here.

I have got a Compaq HQ Presario cq 58 and its nearly been 2 years since I got it so it does not have a warranty on it.

2 days ago I left it on on my bed and went outside. When I came back 2 hours later its battery was dead so I plugged it in its power but unfortunately it won't turn on. There is no light when I plug in its power.

My question is is my motherboard dead OR my PSU is failing?

Any replies I appreciate it.

use a multimeter, to measure the power supply's output.

Set the multimeter to DC-20v. and insert the red probe into the tip, and rouch the black prove to the metal outer ring of the plug.

Most laptops work on 13-19v DC, at well below 5A, so its relatively safe, but of course take care when dealing with any power.

The 3rd option you didnt consider is that the battery itself overheated and got labelled as 'bad' by its little chip, meaning it'll never actually charge up.

    Good luck!

    • Coz i dont have a multimeter i cant test the power unit..the laptop wont turn on without a battery as well..thank you for your reply though.

      • Buy one.
Over your lifetime, it'll be one of the most handy $8 you'll ever spend.

(8 buck ones are at Jaycar)

        • I finally tested the power unit of the laptop with a multimater and it showed 14v. I believe the problem isn't with the PSU.

Was the computer turned on when you left it on the bed? And the exhaust port on the underside? If it was, and the laptop didn't enter sleep mode, it might have overheated since the exhaust port was blocked by the fabric of the bed.

Thats my bet, you strangled it to death, no air = dead laptop.

On the plus side, it didnt burn your house down.

    • The laptop was on the bed when i left it and yes it was on. Last thing i remember was i left utorrent app.open and I am pretty sure that it didnt have much battery left beforei left it.

I will take it to the local comp store to check to see what the problem is once i have enough time

Thank you for your time though.

    • Unfortunately I do not have the proof of purchase. Bought it from Bigw.I wonder if provide repairing services.

    1. Remove the battery from the computer.
    2. Turn on the computer using the cord. Remember not to put back the battery yet. Just the cable and the computer connected. If the computer turns on, then, you need to replace the battery.
    3. If it still not turning on by using the cord alone. Try to wiggle the cord to check whether it's loose or not. Check if there are some signs of power on the computer. If there is a power like lights lit in the computer, then, it's the computer that's having the problem. You need to bring it to a technician if that's the situation.
    • Tested every single option but it atill wont turn on

      Thank you

  • The laptop might be in deep sleep error. Plug in the power without the battery, turn on the wall outlet, press and hold the laptop's Power Button for 30 seconds to see if it boots up.

    • Tried that, nothing happened. Thank you though.

    One last thing:

    1) remove battery

    2) remove power cable

    3) hold power button down for at least 45 seconds

    4) plug in power only

Now see if it responds. If not, take the laptop down to Officeworks or TGG & tell them you want to purchase a generic power replacement but want to verify that is the issue. They ought to do it - as otherwise, you'll purchase & return anyhow, right?

    Good luck!
