I will agree to that, unbranded doesn't make any difference in cases of short distance.

      • +5

it doesnt make a difference AT ALL mate….

HDMI is digital, it either works or it doesnt work…. a cheap cable just as good as a 500 dollar monster cable.

        • +1

Not true. A faulty cable can result in artefacts like sparkles on the screen - so it sort-of works (you can see the image), but not really (it's not perfect). I just used a mini HDMI cable on Friday that had that problem.

That said, a good-quality midrange cable (lets say $10-20 for 1m) will be identical to a $150 monster cable. The only difference might be physical durability. Maybe.

        • -1

That's what I thought before. However in practice there's a difference once the cable is longer than 5 meters

        • @eug:

this is true as i have some cheapies from DX and the 3m ones produce some of these sparkles and audio "pops"

While I agree that it make no difference for normal HDMI cables, I'd take brand name micro HDMI cables with a reasonable enough price any day. This falls in same bucket as microusb cables that build quality matters when they are for mobile devices so you will have to plug and unplug all the time. I've lost count how many generic $1 cables I've gone through now while my Samsung supplied ones are still going strong.

Pfft, my $1 cables are still going strong also
          You're on drugs!

I agree with blahman. A cheap cable can be perfectly fine in many scenarios, but they don't suit everybody.

If you regularly plug/unplug the cable or move it around (e.g. unplugging it from your laptop every day), a cheap cable can develop problems sooner than a good-quality cable. The cheap cable will no doubt use thin 30AWG wires, and the pins on the plug can suffer from fatigue or wear resulting in dodgy connections later on.

I just used a cheap HDMI cable a few weeks ago whose plug wasn't shaped correctly. It didn't look crushed or anything, it just didn't fit the socket. Pretty annoying. Jamming in a poorly-made cable can also damage the socket on your expensive laptop.

$20 is quite a bit for a 1m cable though. $10 or so should be able to buy a pretty decent cable. Once you get down to the ~$3 price points, don't be surprised if the cable fails one day.

        • @betheball: I dont think you will get $1 HDMI cable, USB yes.

        • @betheball:

          Agree.

    • Agree, unless you need it today and only feel comfortable with branded cables. Otherwise just buy 8 of these and have a lifetime supply of backups

    Haha $20 1m, unbeatable !

  • Almost as good as Monster HDMI cables.

    • +1

At least with Monster cables, I don't have the negative associations with awful Belkin firmware.

Hand in your badge as you leave.

    • haha this comment! feel bad for op, but thanks for sharing the deal :) perhaps if someone wants peace of mind and doesn't mind paying a bit extra it might appeal to them

      • +1

We'd need a bargain on pieces of mind if they think that a name on a digital signal carrier makes any difference.

Unless the added cost makes the 0's rounder and the 1's more one like

        • +1

durability/longevity? i've had bad experiences with generic micro/mini usb cables in the past, I'd imagine this could be a possibility here as well.

not justifying the cost of $50 hdmi cables etc, but cheaper generic products aren't always as good as they seem (obviously this will vary from product to product).

        • +3

          …pieces of mind

How many pieces are required for peace of mind?

If memory serves me correctly the ABS in 2012 suggested 7.6 is ideal.

Not all cheap cables are good, but good cables can be cheap. Heck, buy a $20 tablet and it'll come with a good cable :)
Sorry, but this is a rather bad deal.

Been using a $2 ebay special from tablet to tv when travelling for several years now

  • +1

Need one today? Don't wanna be ripped off? MSY have them for $3.

  • +1

I remember getting 3 regular cables from ebay for like 5bux. Never had an issue. I'm sure there are similar deals for Micro HDMI. I can't believe there are people out there that think branded cables are any better than the the cheap stuff.

  • You'd be pissed of your $20 cable broke. Id rather hedge my bets on multiple unbranded ones for the same price.

  • It would suit a very high end TV I suppose…
