Why do some buyers even bother to make ridiculously unreasonable offers?

I received an expensive lens as Xmas gift but I dont want it. The lens is newest Canon 85mm 1.2F selling for 2200+ even for grey imports. Mine is Australian stock with Australian warranty and with the original receit and BRAND NEW IN BOX!.
I'm listing it for $2000 and ready to accept lower offer. However, ppl start to make unreasonable offers like $1200. The funny part is someone is making an offer of $1300 and told me mine is worth less than $1400. However, when he said he wants to trade in with one of his used lens, he is valuing his used lens for $500 while the same lens is selling brand new for $369.

Why do ppl even bother to make those ridiculous unreasonable offers?

  • The best thing is search completed listings, see what the lense has sold for recently, set a price near the high end with offers.. Can also auto decline offers

  • Why not ? In 2013 my neighbor bought a mint condition 2010 Subaru Impreza R G3 for 9K with just 7500ks on it from a expat living in inner city (Private Sale) It was advertised for 15K then reduced to 13K and he had couple of month before leaving the country for good. My neighbors inspected the car and liked it and offered 12K which was turned down and they walked away. Fast fwd >> 2 weeks later on Friday evening >> got a call from the same guy and this time they said they can only pay 9K and he agreed to their surprise. The reason his move date was advanced and he made it very clear that it has to be paid and collected tomorrow. True story probably 9K was a better offer than the dealers offer !! It doesn't hurt to ask for a ridiculous price but personally I wont do it myself.

  • Remember, Auctions are not about the true price of an item, its about how much the person is willing to pay for the item.

Basically you laid the cards on the table (you basically said you don't want the item which is why you are selling it), therefore it is really just depends on how many is willing to offer you the price you want. If nobody is willing then you either have to keep the item or sell it for cheaper.

  • So basically the longer you fish the bigger the fish you catch. That is if you continue to offer a low price you eventually get at that price eventually.

  • My mate bought a new motorbike and his old one just sat there for a few months. I said I'd give him a grand for it. He declined. Every time I saw him, I'd say 'So, hows the old bike doing.. wanna get rid of it for a grand'. Almost a year passes, and he saw the value in getting rid of it for a grand, rather than making into a sell-able state, spending time and money advertising it.

This was about 4 years ago, I still ride the bike almost daily. I didn't need the bike, but for a grand it was worth it to me.

Silly offers may sound silly at the beginning, but sometimes you get a bargain at the right time (like vroomkroom story above). You may revisit this post in a few months when it hasn't sold for the price you're asking, or you may get a buyer who was looking for brand new and pays the price you want..

    • +1

my bro was offered about 3k for his '86 bmw (long time ago).
he turned it down, trying to get 4k+
it sat under his mango tree so long it nearly started growing mango's on the windshield.
it was ruined by weather on bat-poo.. and eventually went for a few hundred bucks.
he shoulda accepted the 3k and moved on.

  • So basically the guy in this post is complaining because he couldn't get a higher price for a item he wants to sell. lol.
