  Hi.

  Do you have a smartphone? If he's going to be there for a while it might prove to be more cost effective to get one if you don't. That way you can communicate at no cost to his mobile via apps including free Skype to Skype voice calls.

    Hi I have an apple 5 i phone
    How do you use for free skype to skype voice calls
    I tried last night but skype gave me a skype phone
    number that you have to pay for each month
    I didn't want to have to pay rental costs

    My son is away in london teaching at high school for up to 2 years

  Hi. That's good news, you should be sorted. In an ideal world your son will have an iPhone as that's going to be the easiest method for you guys to stay in touch at no cost.

  Regardless of him having an iPhone, he'll need to have a free Skype account on whatever phone he has (I'm gonna assume he will have some form of smartphone) and you'll both need to add each other as contacts, here is how to do it:

  If he has an iPhone then 'texting' is even simpler. You just need to add his mobile number into your iPhone and when you message him your phone will do the rest. The message bubble should be blue, not green, and that's how you know the iPhone is sending a free imessage as opposed to a costly text.

  Remember all of this is using data, so ensure you have enough, it can be via WiFi or your mobile plan, but outside of that it's completely without cost.
