"was" is the correct Strine term to use with thongs.
Was is ok if it referred to "the price". Or "thongs" is short for "a pair of thongs".
Far more common is the use of "there's" even when it clearly should be "there are". E.g. "There's two people here to see you." A suggestion I once read is simply to word it more concisely: "Two people are here to see you."
