3TB Seagate 7200 RPM HDD for $122 (Pickup - Adelaide/Sydney/Brisbane) @ Green Box IT

82

GreenboxIT has HDDs on sale today. Last time I saw the sale I waited until I got home to discuss it with the wife… And the deal ended, so this might evaporate any time.

Most 3.5" HDDs are on sale, although the best price is on the 3TB Seagate 7200RPM drive at $122. Not as good as the $109 I saw it for last time (I'm still kicking myself!)

Note that the security certificate is expired for almost a year, and when I tried to pay with Paypal, it directed me to the sandbox (test) site where I don't have an account, so there was a moment of panic at this being a scam… But I cancelled the payment (got confirmation email and everything) and then paid with the 'Paypal express' option and it all worked fine.

Pickup only from Adelaide, Sydney and Brisbane I think. Unless you want to pay $100+ for shipping…

MSY - $125 currently, so not really worth jumping at to be honest

    and $128 for WD Green.

Personally I prefer WD, I've had failures with Seagate drives, haven't with WD

    • My Seagate just failed the other day after only just over a year of use. Ridiculous.

      • I won't buy Seagate again.

        • +1

Me neither. WD Blacks from now on.

      • I had 4x4tb seagates die one after another in space of a week

    • Stay away from Seagate unless it's just for random stuff like movie and music, but don't put your important things on them if you want safe storage

      and $128 for WD Green.

Sure, enjoy your horrendously slow WD Green that goes to sleep more than a narcoleptic.

I've had failures with Seagate drives, haven't with WD

      Back. Up. Your. Stuff.

How many times does this have to be said? HDDs are disposable products with finite lifespans.

Obviously, but backed up or not, it doesn't change the fact I've seen 2 Seagate's die, with different uses, but (touch wood) haven't had the same with any WD, even under extreme use.

        • it doesn't change the fact I've seen 2 Seagate's die

          I'll alert the Prime Minister.

Individual experiences are meaningless and objective, mass studies on manufacturer-specific failure rates are difficult to come by. The Seagate hysteria is rooted in bad publicity from years ago ala "The Click of Death" or firmware issues with the older 7200.9-10 Barracudas.

Maybe if you buy hard drives by the dozen you're going to be noticing a larger failure rate for Seagate and the reduced long-term running costs justify the extra initial investment, but for the individual who has at most 2 - 3 internal and external HDDs over several years? It's not really enough of a probability to warrant people ignoring better prices for the supposed peace of mind. Just back up your stuff.

I've had a Toshiba DT01ACA100, a WD Blue WD10EZEX-60M, 2 WD Greens and a Seagate ST3500418AS fail me in the last 2 months, spread across SANs, NASs and workstations. Again, these failures are not trends indicative of one manufacturer's supposed superiority, because there is no frame of reference or golden rule as to how long a HDD should last and how well it should perform.

Hard drives are all manufactured in the same industrial parks in Thailand to the same standards.

Someone has to get the duds. If it were any other product category, you wouldn't be so hasty to label the entire manufacturer's range of products as worthless, but because you've had 2 bad HDDs (lol), over a span of probably 5 years or more, you see fit to cast Seagate in a bad light.

          even under extreme use.

          Lol, "extreme".

        • @Amar89:

          Personally I prefer

Sorry, maybe I should've stated that it wasn't a scientific study, I didn't review thousands of drives.

Maybe before writing a wall of text, you could've noticed that what I wrote was my opinion of my experiences with the relevant brands. I did think that was clearly stated, obviously not.

        • @Spackbace:

Maybe before writing a wall of text,

Maybe you can hold onto your rationality in the future and realise that you were simply unlucky and that it didn't signify anything more than that.

Your opinion is not the problem; the insinuation rooted in misconception is, as well as the fact that the uninformed continued to spread it like it's gospel. "I had 2 Seagates die so let me just spend your money for you because I am now a subject matter expert on all things magnetic storage-related."

In every Seagate deal on OB there is a minimum of several people bringing up this tired, old fable time and time again, and virtually none of them can come up with even a half-way decent justification for their deeply-held, religious prejudice for Seagate.

You've probably bought dozens of bad apples from Coles in your lifetime, why not boycott them while you're at it?

        • @Amar89:

NFS: Most Wanted is actually one of the best in the series. Much better than Carbon or Shift.

You know that saying about opinions? Yeah everyone has one. What I wrote (and a few others on this post) was clearly my own opinion based on my observations, and was stated as such. I wasn't saying anyone had to follow my lead, hence why I stated the price at MSY for the item.

Sorry, I didn't realise my opinion was up for attack by someone who feels the need to state their own opinion as well.

        • @Spackbace: Where did I say X video game developer was rubbish because of one bad apple? Oh that's right, I didn't. I said one product was sub-par, but another was better.

What I wrote (and a few others on this post) was clearly my own opinion based on my observations, and was stated as such.

          *Observations = Flawed.

Hard drives fail. WD, Seagate, Toshiba, Hitachi (now Toshiba); they all fail. You got a dud. Welcome to Capitalism. Take it with a modicum of apathy next time.

      • Even if you back up, having products that you use every day die on you - whatever the product - is still a pain though, is it not?

  • Why Western Digital don't have any desktop 7200RPM drive 3TB and up? Black Edition is too expensive.

    • The Enterprise drive is 7200rpm and will FIT in your desktop, does that count ? :) 5yr warranty..

      http://budgetpc.com.au/computer-hardware/storage-devices/int…

I guess they figure if you want speed - you go for SSD - and generally large scale storage (eg streaming media) doesnt require fast spin rates.

I picked up a 3TB WD Purple (Surveillance) drive today for $155.. doesnt say RPM though…

  • Not too bad - but as said above, several other places (which will be closer for some people) have it for $125

I've had bad experiences ordering from GBIT (had to cancel in the end - about a month after ordering and no delivery).

    http://staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=3tb+7200&spos=3

Stay away from the Toshiba's tho.. Seagate or Western Digital are generally (no brand is perfect) good.

    • +2

I'm pretty sure you got Toshiba and Seagate mixed up there.

      • Ok, I have to eat my words. I've always found Seagate to be reliable, and I was reading about high failure rates on 5tb Toshiba drives, but seems Seagate fails a lot more than WD and Hitachi (no Tosh comparison found)

        https://www.backblaze.com/blog/hard-drive-reliability-update…

Although it's worrying that even WD failure rates are up for 3tb sizes over 1.5tb.

    • +2

Err Toshiba's sh*t all over both WD and Seagate.

  • +1

What? I bought Toshiba 7200 3TB drives from Skycomp for $121 about 6 months ago, standard price! I would buy Toshiba over Seagate any day

  • +1

Pickup only from Adelaide, Sydney and Brisbane I think.

Do they still charge you for picking up?

  • I got the 5tb segate external for $178 thought that was awesome, deal is posted on ozbargain

    • is it still working? the 5Tb were some of the worst to suffer early failure from the Seagate range.

      • Yep used 3.5tb so far :)

Steer clear of Green Box IT. If you think MSY are bad, then you don't want to deal with Green Box IT.
Nice to see them adding GST to their prices now, too. They weren't before until the very final checkout.

    • I've twice had my bank call me up to say my debit card had been compromised (about 6 months apart). Had to go through the procedure of new card etc. Going through the time periods of transactions, GreenboxIT came up as a possible culprit but so did multiple petrol stations I visited. It wasn't until I read up of Whirlpool of other people having similar issues after having purchased there…

      http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1651327

Perhaps they had been compromised and had no knowledge, but when a business suffers that over such a long period of time, I have trust issues. Will never order from them again.

    • Damn. Reading the links below it sounds like they can afford to quote the gst up front now, as they are going on a shopping spree with your credit card behind your back.

  • No offence but what would you discuss about buying a hard disk ?

    • +2

      Permission ?

  • +1

When you click on shipping or Terms and Conditions it comes back "File not found"

Don't even know where the located in Adelaide but I wouldn't leave my money there.

  • Went through to checkout just to see what their postage costs would be … SSL certificate for their secure payments portal has expired.

    No thanks.

    • After reading the stuff on whirlpool I can't believe anyone would ever risk buying off these guys.. dodge city. I wonder if police have investigated after so many people have had their credit cards scammed after buying from GBIT.

    • Only just.. "its security certificate expired 303 day(s) ago" :)

  • +2

Suspect security checkout, long history of customers becoming victims of fraud, plus other unethical crap like pickup fees means this store is best to steer well clear. Not worth the headache.
