Buying Overseas (America)

Hello,

I've always wanted a Canon EOS 1000D and was planning to buy from Myer for 999 (i have myer gift cards and am aware its cheaper else where)

But i saw on the news that its cheaper in America! and the Aussie dollar is around 93 cents now?

So my question is - the risks associated with this? (i'm new at this)

Also is it worth the risk to save 300 bucks?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated

    HI

You should consider re warranty if anything goes wrong and postage fee as well .

I would rather buy it here , if you shop around you might be able to find best deals in Oz .

check it out this website www.shopbot.com.au

You may find it helpful . Print out the good deal and then do bargain with the shop .

    Good luck buddy

NB : cited from shopbot re your Canon DSLR : http://www.shopbot.com.au/default.asp?kw=canon+1000&position…

  • Apparently the 1000D is also known as the Rebel XS, and it seems you could get it for $597.30 USD including shipping to Australia (approx $645 AUD), but if you could get it for $540 AUD like shopbot suggests then I think you have to question if it's really worth it…

Plus I see that website has the following disclaimer about international shipping:

The recipient of an international shipment may be subject to import duties and taxes, which are levied once a shipment reaches your country and brokerage fees / custom clearance charges which may be imposed by the carrier . These charges must be borne by the recipient; we have no control over these charges and cannot predict what they may be.
In the event a shipment is refused and returned, any taxes, duties, custom fees , brokerage fees or shipping charges incurred from this return, will be the responsibility of the customer.

  • The cheapest i've seen it in Australia is 900 dollars (thats with the twin lenses)

The prices shown on shopbot is just the body without the lenses

    It's a tough decision

    Buy in america
    - save 300 bucks

    Risks
    - No warranty
    - possible taxes and custom issues

    Such a tough decision grrr

    • I would think the possible taxes and custom issues is a small risk given all the junk I've bought off eBay in China or Hong Kong. As the item is a like a personal parcel worth only a relatively small price rather than a container load of goods costing thousands, I would believe that you really wouldn't have any possible taxes or customs issues. That disclaimer I think would mostly be referring to certain other countries. The other possible issue is the wall plug or charger, but usually the power supply can take 240v input meaning it would just be a matter of an US-AU adapter or getting a figure 8 cable…

I've read that you don't get charged GST on items < 1000

I think the same applies for customs.. but i hear stories…

I guess the best thing i can do is actually call them up.

But yes 300 dollar saving (plus they throw in more freebies than aussie sellers) is far too tempting

  • Did you see this listing on ebay: 110446623453 Looks like it could be a good deal (no bids yet at $500) only 3 month old, seller in Qld. Worth checking out.

As new Canon EOS 1000D purchased new in Brisbane aprox 3 months ago, comes with all manuals and cables. Included is 18-55 Canon Lens and 75-300 Canon lens. Battery charger, battery grip, AA adaptor, 16gig Kingston SD card and a Case Logic bag. No marks scratches or damage. Can be viewed at Samford northside of Brisbane. Pickup preferred but can ship in Oz, no overseas buyers unless you have a clean history. I am upgrading to a newer Canon and dont need two cameras. Will supply original receipt as well for warranty.

(I am not affiliated with the seller in any way).

  • Don't forget sometimes items in america can be lower in terms of quality than goods sold in say Japan, Australia and Europe. I've mentioned this earlier with regards to notebooks. Any notebook I've bought for a friend conked out after it's warranty period. The notebooks I've bought in here and Japan, still going strong.

If the item has an international warranty, then maybe you may want to give it a shot. Prices should fall anyway since our dollar is strong, right???

    • like for like? identical brands? Models? - then I would suggest its very unlikely that a manufacturer makes, two variations one with poorer quality parts for two markets the retooling costs etc make that unlikely

      • It was like for like but the place of manufacture for some of the goods in america was different to say the goods we purchased in Europe or Japan. My mum was a flight attendant so having been to various places for the most part, it's true.

This may not reign true for everything though as there are some like for like items in america that are somewhat cheaper as well as like for like items that are cheaper outside of the US that are produced in the same factory. I suppose if you live in america, you can afford to keep buying the cheap shit they churn out when it keeps konking out :)

My only bad examples were tape players (Sony Walkman tape player WITH FM Radio) and notebooks. The sony was a big thing as when I was a kid they were really dear and high end. If you know what you're getting and it comes with an international warranty (the notebooks I got didn't) then go for it.

  • $540 is a good deal for the body only, the Canon kit lense is crap, don't bother with it.

I'd suggest doing some research and then spend the money you saved on a good second hand zoom lense from Ebay.

  • if buying from the usa you will also need a adaptor for the charger as their plug is different than ours. no biggie but still a consideration to think about.
