Probably designed for a high impedance output. Since our earphones are of a lower impedance, more current can flow for a given output voltage compared to high(er) impedance loads.
More current = greater deflection of the speaker diaphragm = increased volume.
The heat is generated by direct current (DC) flowing through the headphones. Hear the click when you plug them in? I haven't got a multimeter/oscilloscope with me to confirm this, but it's most likely the case. A half decent design would use a capacitor to block the DC and allow the AC (in the form of the audio signal) to pass unimpeded.
tl;dr Don't use your good headphones with this device :)
