I have been looking for a Win8.1 tab and was sold on this tablet
based on a few review such as : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N0tKMMN3FQo
Very good specs and I don't think there's better price elsewhere right now.
AUD$6.25 for DHL shipping so should be here in about 5 days. Will update with more info once I got it
in my hands :)

    It's cheaper here: http://activities.aliexpress.com/x98_air_3g_home.php

You can combine with a US$10 voucher and it's US$189

    Note: Today only!

    • Don't know anything about these, but OP's appears to be an Air II and yours an Air (with 3G)? Might be different models if the model numbers are anything like Apple.

      • It's pretty similar. I think it runs the same proccessor. But yes you are right, it's a different version.

        • Edit: I don't really understand the model differences here. It seems they are different.
Ali calls it the 'new Air', but they are both X98.

The specs are the same except for connectivity
The Ali one has 3G and GPS. This one doesn't.

    • You can't get the $10 voucher anymore. Only between the 1-7 Jan 2015

      • You can still get a $10 voucher for signing up to Ali if you've never used it before.

  • DOH! kinda kicking myself for buying that HP sleekbook x2 now….DANG!!! :(

  • Would have been awesome if it had a GPS

edit: looks like the 3g version has GPS and uses the same processor as the AIR2 making the 3g version a better deal (cheaper and 3G and GPS functionality)

  • Good price (US$189). Had a quick look and it's USD $243 with DHL shipping.
Not clear how to get the today only deal, but good deal if you can get it
and for those wanting to get one today.

  • Did…did he break the screen with just his thumb? :S

  • so tempted…must resist

Do not buy this tablet or you will find out it is a way to judge you luck. Most of user found this tablet will have blue screen, system crash or some other problems which will make you crazy.

    • So… where's the source?

  • This sounds awesome!I brought a 700t1c and install android on it ages ago to dual boot it.
    But this concept rocks!

  • Battery life any good?

  • so tempted…

  • Timing is good on this as I am in the market for a Win 8.1 tablet to travel with.

    I Don't need 3G.

I was looking at an ASUS T100 transformer. Officeworks has the 64Gb version for $397 (Surprised I couldn't find cheaper than officeworks (apart from one place that charges $55 for shipping to WA)).

This is a ~$100 cheaper cheaper even adding the cost of a keyboard.

It looks to have a better screen resolution, and the dual Boot is a bonus.

The downsides for the comparison is the screen is physically smaller, no USB3, only 32GB, Unknown battery life, and not likely to get much manufacturer support.

Damn you Ozbargain, now I need to weigh this up…

Wait for newer models if you don't need them now. Atom Cherry Trail does improve on GPU which Bay Trail wasn't that good with and Windows 10 and other things like USB type C might make this year's tablets to be worth the waiting.

Even if you don't wait that long, there are more models of Bay Trail tablets coming out, which might reduce the older model's price by heaps. i.e. T100 Chi, etc.

      • I travel next month, so need something now.

I might stick with the T100 as it's more mature and comes with office H&S 2013.

XDA has good thread with fixes for the various issues on the X98.
        http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/general/teclast-x98-…

        • Hmmmm, I'd actually suggest you to get something else, since:

          • It's fairly old and was the first batch of the Bay Trail tablets with z3740.
          • t100 is way too expensive compared to what US got for it ($299 USD on the release day).
My point is, it was meant to be a budget tablet to begin with and it has been out for a long time, over a year. It came out when MS didn't have "with Bing" option which reduced the cost of OS which would make it lose its advantages on price.
          • There are better options, in my personal opinion. Some people were recommending Pavilion X2 tablet and Acer Switch 10, but I've never had them so I cannot really comment on them.

          HP Pavilion x2 Tablet review

        • @AznMitch:

Thanks, I looked at the X2, They are all more expensive. The only one in a similar price range was the 32GB Z3745D version, and that does not include M$ office. So I saw no real benefit.

The Acer is nice, but an extra $100, and no M$ Office.

Like you said originally the the Cherry trails and Win 10 will be out this year, so I just need something to last a year or two.

I like the idea of the X98, but by the time I add DHL shipping, decent Keyboard, Micro SD, and M$ Office, the T100 looks a better package. Especially after TRS refund. Just wish I could find it cheaper somewhere…

        • @petestrash: True, but t100 has a bad keyboard dock (with weird weight distribution) and a bad screen, that was why I was recommending something else. But, I do see where you are coming from. If you are fine with those (or at least know that those are problems that it has), t100 wouldn't be a bad choice either.

        • @petestrash: I went thru a very similar decision making dilemma … The T100 is a pretty good choice, very practical (I'm still using my old ASUS transformer prime TF201 ($740 new!) with the detachable keyboard. The T100 was at the top of my list. I went for the X98 because it's light, good screen res, runs Win applications (MS office included, dual OS is a bonus), nice to look at. ie. a tablet :)
Anyway, go with what ever suite you best. If you need something for heavy work then the T100 may be a better choice. AznMitch is right with wait-and-save but there is the hidden opportunity cost of not having the thing right now which to me is far greater than then $ saving sometime later on :)

I've seen his videos and like the keyboard case he has, but can't seem to find one under US$50 shipped DHL/EMS as I need it soon.

          I'm still hovering.

I did find an X98 dual Boot for US$203.89 Shipped DHL.

US$203 shipped DHL is a pretty good deal. Better than what I've paid a few days ago…

        • @foolball:
Yep, I saw the target one come through today. If I can get one in WA, it will probably swing my decision.

There are quite a few IPAD ones around like the Kogan, but not sure if the form factor is exactly the same so it would clip on to the X98 snugly.

        • Confirm same price in WA for the Target Keyboard. They also have an Ipad mini version on clearance for $20.

Joondalup has about 6 left of the regular and a couple of the mini's.

FWIW Innaloo, Stirling and Whitfords have none of the full size.

I have ordered an X98, hopefully all good. thanks for swinging me…

        • @petestrash:
Hey congrats on the new toy.
Hopefully will get mine some time next week.

Don't buy the 3G… Its screen refreshes at 48hz.. Not very smooth animations.

    Air 2 refreshes at 60hz

    • +1

I'm furiously researching because I am quite interested. But I think the refresh is fixed in the later dual boot models, and can be fixed in the earlier models. See http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/general/teclast-x98-… post #4

      Dual boot BIOS benefits:
Fixes 60Hz refresh rate for Windows 32 bit system
Probably on old bios there are low voltage settings for GPU that makes some problems with 3D
games, after updated to dual bios no problems at all for many users

It's the same hardware after all.

      • Must be scary flashing a BIOS with no warranty if shit hits the fan.
