Rock-N-Roll Chain Lube (Red) 4oz $4.95 - Amart Sports

580

edit: Gold has been OzBargained but Red remains

Great lube for about half the price of everywhere else. Unfortunately I'm in WA so I can't take advantage of the price but perhaps some fellow OzBargain riders can :)

Nothing unfortunate about being in WA - great place! +1 for sharing something you can't have a piece of.

    • I agree. well done for posting and for acknowledging.

  • +3

I use this currently on my MTB, can vouch for it being a great lube for dry conditions, much quicker to apply than most as you just have to give the chain a quick wipe afterwards (as opposed to e.g. shimano, finish line, where you have to spend ages drying off excess).

  • Is it just me or is postage really expensive??? Can you pick up in store?

    • -6

I got $20.98 post! Even if it was free shipping I wouldn't deal with this mob again.

    • +3

Yep you can pick up in store - http://www.amartsports.com.au/Stores

I also found postage horrific. I'm trying to put a $100 order together for Pushy's they have the 16oz Gold lube for $27 (or $20 for the Red or Blue) but their post is exxy too.

      • +1

If you can, just wait. Pushys will have another free ship promotion eventually.

        • Thanks, I'll wait but I'm really get low on my Rock n Roll :) I think there will soon come a time I'll just have to buy more bike stuff - damn!

      • I cant seem to find a "pick up in store" option.

Oh its for a bike.. 'Peddling and Shifting' written on the package lmao..

I thought it was for umm… you know..!!

(I started to think when I saw 'makes your chain look like new' in the description) lmao!!!

Suitable for combined use with my Bogan condoms?

I did a bike maintenance course once and the course instructor said any household lube works fine on bikes. E.g. Bunnings normal price for 100mls is $4.80. http://www.bunnings.com.au/100ml-household-oil-lubricant_p58…

So no need for people to rush out to buy this one.

    • -2

Yes but it needs to be "fancy" to complete the boutique whanquer ensemble.

Am I being negged by a host of Ozbargain professional bike mechanics who know better but won't say why?

        Hi Knight, two things;

        1. This is about 120-130ml (3.96c/ml) vs your suggested sky high priced 4.8c/ml lube, ignoring the fact I've never been into Bunnings and walk out purchasing one thing.

        2. Your right, I used cheap machine oil for many years on my chain and it works very well. I've also used motor oil and smelly gear oil. However with all of those 'oils' I found I'd collect lots of gunk on the chain and get build up on my chain which I liked to clean off prior to applying fresh oil = wasted time and additional stuff needed.

The stuff listed above cleans out the old stuff and leaves behind a film of lube, it works really well. The cassette still needs a clean every 7-10 applications but its much quicker and easier.

Additionally I've found this stuff (4oz) lasts for about a year in a 2 road bike (6,000km) household. The machine oil lasted ages too but had the clean off grit factor :)

        • I agree with everything you said except for the "cleaning off" factor. I bet if you throw your chain into a bucket of degreaser after using this stuff there will still be gunk around it everywhere.

But it does pick up a lot less gunk than finish line.

      • I use light machine oil as well. I don't know how much I got it for because I just had it lying around but this Rock n' Roll stuff is a steal.

I have to agree with hoxygt, though. I do have to clean out my chain. Although I've got that down to a routine by now - I dunk the whole thing in a bottle with mineral turps and shake like crazy. Always fascinates me, the amount of crud that comes off.

When my bottle of light machine oil runs out, I'm springing for this stuff again.

Er…that's more expensive. Turn in your OzBargain badge, please.

Needed some lube this week. My girlfriend wants to go for a ride

Remember the old days - chain need oil - no worries rub it down with some standard motor oil then clean with a rag.
    Now everything is fancy

    • +1

Well in 'the old days' you would also have gotten heaps of dirt sticking to your chain that was covered with oil. These lubricants are dry based lubricants that doesn't encourage muck to stick to it, what you want is something that lubricates but isn't wet and causes muck to stick to it - because it kind of defeats the purpose. But any dry based lube will do e.g. teflon lube used for locks should also be ok

      • I never had any issue like that at all. Just oiled the chain from time to time and rubbed it down as I described. It was never wet with oil, soaked and then dried right off with a rag, never had mud or crud sticking to it and never broke one either.

        • +2

At $4.95 I'd hardly call it fancy.

Ooohhh the old days, we could talk for hours

        • @hoxygt:
Squirt of oil from the garage virtually free. This is Ozbargain.

        • @King Tightarse: I know my old man would agree with you and I used to help him clean my roadster chains when young.
Old school ways are sometimes better.
But 30 years on, technology has changed and improved many things, including new tech. lubes, as noted above by smol84.
The growth in space and military engineering, means the science is right. Even plumbers have new and more efficient ways of doing things. My own experience with cleaning my mountain bike chain does confirm the improvement using these lubes.

  • SOLD OUT :(

    • Note the Red Rock n Roll is also excellent - http://www.amartsports.com.au/Product/Rock-N-Roll-Absolute-D…

Is there an option to click and collect or check store stock. I cant seem to find those options on the website.

        • Yep $9 shipping kills the deal, I live near an AMart, will absolutely buy some if I can pickup in store, possibly cheaper elsewhere if bought as part of my next 'bike parts order' with free shipping from overseas.

        • @2ndeffort:

Let me know if you find it cheaper, I buy OS as well but this is as cheap as I've seen it - except the Pushy's price which is also good.

        • +1

          @hoxygt: Agree this is very cheap but Lube = $5 + $8 postage = $13.

Avanti Plus in Croydon, same lube over the counter = $12 http://www.bikeexchange.com.au/a/bike-chain-lubricant/rock-n…

I am looking for some wheels at the moment, if I buy wheels I will get free shipping to Oz, in which case the $10.97 at Merlin is also cheaper http://www.merlincycles.com/rocknroll-absolute-dry-lube-4oz-…

As I said before though, if I can get it over the counter at Amart for $5, I am all over it.
