Easter hot cross buns: How early is too early?

My local Coles brought out hot cross buns en masse on 02 January. They've always had "fruit buns" and "choc chip" buns on the shelf, but I'm talking a big display bin of their Easter range. Easter is early this year, but 02 Jan still strikes me as premature!

That said, I do love a gooey hot cross bun :) Let's hope there's no palm oil in them this year, Coles!

It's the same as last year. They just roll straight from Halloween into Christmas into Easter (with a splashing of Australia Day).

They just need two extra holidays in the middle of the year and the retailing landscape would be complete.

There was a bit of a resistance last year to them being introduced so early but I haven't heard about it this year. Australian consumers are just like frogs in a pot of water where the temperature is slightly raised until boiling; they never hop out.

Home brand labels are a case in point.

Would you prefer if we were a white bread and milk society?

Pretty boring IMO, when I lived in Japan they made an event out of everything with always something that would at least catch your eye. I mean even if it's a bag of flour, at least try to sell it to me as if it's a damn good bag of flour.

I love travelling to Japan, especially the late night cheap TV shows which either have Arashi v ordinary public or men dressed up as women trying to get other men to fall for them…

Now what was your point again?

        • +1

My point is I don't have point. Just like those hot cross buns not needing a reason to be sold.

        • @plmko: where in Japan were you?

  • I saw that in Hurstville Coles too. And the Morisset Coles had Christmas Puddings on September 30th.

I like hot cross buns, eat them any day of the year.

If people didn't buy them - the supermarkets wouldn't sell them.

Every year there's this outcry that hot cross buns are "already" on sale, yet obviously people are buying them!

I don't quite get it - people are more than happy to go shopping-crazy for every day leading up to Christmas day, then go shopping crazy for every day after Christmas day, yet the moment hot cross buns appear there's moral outrage and letters-to-editors - "how dare the stores commercialise this time of year! They're just in it for the profits!"

    Very bizarre.

People love to complain, especially when the media or their friends tell them they should be outraged by something.

Chocolate taste better in the shape of bunnies or eggs and I like hot cross buns so the earlier the better for me.

Christmas on the other hand is a pain in the arse. People want presents, shops play crappy jingles and everyone is too 'cheery'.

      • Chocolate used to taste better in the shape of a bunny or eggs because Red Tulip chocolate was amazing. Then they changed the recipe and it tasted like rubbish.

      • "…Christmas on the other hand is a pain in the arse. People want presents, shops play crappy jingles and everyone is too 'cheery'…"

These are likely to be the best two sentences I will read today.

        Thank you.

      • shops play crappy [Christmas] jingles

When the One Direction promo was up around a year ago, their songs ruled Coles' radio-waves for a good 3 months.
Now that is what I call 'crappy'!

    • The shelf life of an Easter bun is very different to most Christmas goodies, though.

There's always fruit buns for sale - why bring decorated fruit buns for an event 3-4 months away in so early?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but no regular fruit buns are the same as hot cross buns (recipe/flavour wise)… at least, I've never had a 'regular' fruit bun with the same texture and same flavour as the ones on offer during Easter.

Specially made 'Easter' hot cross buns come out for easter (think about the packs released by Tip Top for example) which in my experience are a hell of a lot softer and delicious than the fruit buns you can get all year round from your local bakery.

Basically you get way more options around Easter in terms of fruit buns… and some incredible hot cross buns become available. For the rest of the year, you just get the run of the mill boring ones.

I really want a hot cross bun now :(

I meant the Coles-brand ones. At my local store they're the same, and they have the chocolate ones as well :) But I agree re: TipTop… they're so gooey and yummy!

        • @pennae: I've never seen hot cross buns at my Coles during non-Easter times of the year. Sad face.

I'll keep an eye out though, in case I've been overlooking them somehow. There are 2 Coles I visit regularly too.. one has a bigger bakery section than the other. Will definitely be looking out for them. All year round chocolate buns would be bliss.

          I'm gonna get so fat.

    I'd eat them year round.

    • You can, at least at my local Coles. They're always on the shelf, just without the cross. But on Jan 02 they loaded up the display bins with them!

what i want to know is have they started selling mince pies again yet? i want fresh ones, not reduced left over ones.

i had a mince pie eating competition with some friends over advent, now i'm addicted.

  • Well if I was a Christian. I would know that hot cross buns are for lent (aka palm Sunday to Ash Wednesday)

and last time I checked that usualy falls around easter… its like eating the Xmas Pudding in September!

And if I were a Fat Guy, I would know that both of these taste good all year round :D

    • mmm… hot cross buns. DROOLS

  • When I was a kid I always used to think "tastes like raisin toast, what is the point of this"

    • +2

because hot cross buns > raisin toast

  • +1

+1 Should have them all year 'round.

Bought some triple choc ones last week. They didn't last long.

    NEED MOAR.
