Heat Damaged Wine - Dan Murphy Delivery

Hi all

I received a delivery of a case of (not inexpensive) wine from Dan Murphy today (Dans, unlike some other wine companies, does not suspend deliveries on days of extreme heat). Currently, in Adelaide, it is 38 degrees. While I specified that the item could be left unattended if I was not at home, the courier (NexDay) left the wine on my verandah in full heat and in the sun, and did not attempt to knock or ring the doorbell (I've been home all day).

Having opened the box, the wine bottles are all extremely hot to the touch (suggesting they've been cooking in a courier van all day), and I've opened one bottle as a tester, which definitely smells like it's taken a turn for the worse. I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced heat damage to wines during the Dans delivery process, and if having raised the issue, any offer to replace the wines / compensate for the damage has been provided?

  • I would not accept that, give them a buzz to discuss.

Give their customer service line a call, they're usually very helpful and laid back: 1300 72 33 88

I've had to call them a number of times over various orders being messed up. None that were delivered and left in the heat though, so I can't quite answer your questions on that specific scenario… but annoyingly, they once delivered the wrong size bottle of spirit (in a larger order of other items which were correct) - sending me the smaller size instead of the larger which I'd paid for.

Only thing they suggested I do was take it into my nearest store for an exchange. Bit annoying since you've paid for delivery to begin with, to save yourself a trip, but… such is life.

It'll be interesting to see what they ask you to do. Probably just take it into a store as well for a refund/exchange. Might be worth keeping that bottle you've opened too so they can smell it (or taste it if they dare lol).

Perhaps next time don't say leave it at the doorstep if no one is home, may help too.

    • Indeed, will definitely not be checking the 'ok to leaver unattended if required' option in the future!

    • Still would have sat in the hot courier van all day though.

  • In my experience, email them through the contact us link on there webpage. They should credit you and tell you to dispose of the wine - if it is that bad, use for cooking or gifts to family members you dont like!

  • I think it is a bit unrealistic to expect wines to be delivered in anything other than a hot van in summer, they're not going to be using temperature controlled ones. I don't believe they are at fault for anything other than not knocking, which is a little hard to prove conclusively. If you are expecting a delivery and mark they can leave it unattended whilst having nowhere out of the sun to place it, of course its going to be left in the sun. I think this should just be notched down to a lesson learnt, however best of luck with contacting them, would be interested to see what they do.

    • So it is a bit unrealistic to expect delivery of a perishable item in a suitable vehicle ?
Would you accept delivery of meats in the same van ?
What about pizza's without a heat receptacle to keep it warm ?

      Come on man, common sense.
They do not honour returns upon hot unopened wines due to the possibility of the item being spoilt, so they should not deliver items in the same state, simples!

auspost deliver plenty of wine from many online stores. the van they use are the standard 1t with no cooling other then the ac that the drivers enjoy. wine unlike uncooked meat and pizza can be stored at room temperature for days and weeks and can consumed without visiting the hospital.

        • Room temperature is considered to be European Summer temperatures, low 20's, not hight 30's.
It is why wine is served chilled and slightly rested before consumption here.
It's cold, yet allowed suffice time to warm to an universally accepted room temperature.
IS why some countries drink their beer "warm" as it's that damned cold, it does not require chilling anyhow!

  • I took a case back to them not that long ago for no other reason than it tasted like sh** to me.
They happily credited and let me buy something else that I did like.
