Request for OzBargain Night Mode

Hello,

May I request a night mode option for the OzBargain website? It would help all those who stay up late on OzB. The site design is really good so far and an option to turn on night mode in 'My Account' or in the footer of the site would be greatly appreciated. I would be happy with a userscript as well. If it is included in 'My Account' then a future feature could be one that auto enables night mode after a user defined time (e.g. 8pm AEST).

Thanks.

I would also love this feature. I currently just invert colours on iPad to achieve the affect. It isn't perfect as the top banner is bright blue.

  • would like this

foobar actually asked about it via PM quite a while ago, but I did't really want to increase the complexity of the style sheets (especially when we have multiple sites to maintain now). It's more than just "setting background to black & text to white" but there are various shades that also need to be inverted.

    Wear sunglasses

  • Turn the screen brightness down, Isnt hard.

    • It's not just about screen brightness, the white of the backgrounds can make text difficult to read especially late at night.

Back on topic, has anyone tried f.lux?. It changes the colours your monitor displays to be warmer during the evening to make things easier to read. It's a small download and does not require many resources to run. It is available on PC, Mac, Linux and (jailbroken) iOS devices. Can be useful :)

I currently use flux. You can use Alt+Pg Dn/Up to dim the screen's brightness. It's quite a neat solution.

      • Plenty of programs to help. For example i use f.lux on pc and bluelight filter on my android tablet and mobile phone. F.lux automaticly turn on at night and off at sunrise.

You can also mount a LED lighting strip to the back of your LCD monitor if you are the type of person to work in a dark room. The LED backlighting makes the glow of your monitor less harsh overall.

Here's what my temporary setup looks like.

The light is also not a pure white — I don't what color temperature the IKEA lamps are specced at, but it's definitely in the right color range to use at night.

        • I have a lamp which i sometimes use but f.lux helps the most.

Could you add a voting option, I think this is a great idea

  • Get f.lux

I've got it on my iPhone and PC, can't live without it.

voted no because I knew about the browser extensions.

  • Not sure about previous Android OS's but on Lollipop under Accessibility settings you can enable Colour Inversion. Works quite well.

After enabling, there is a toggle in the Notification area for easy switching.

  • Night mode would be awesome, especially for us all-night iPad users. White background is just too overwhelming no matter how much you turn the brightness down.

  • Great idea, I've just started using https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.urbandroid… for android, so far so good.

Pardon my ignorance but wth is night mode?

  • Please do this! OzB melts my bargain loving eyes every night

  • Great idea for night reading.
In the mean time in Windows 10 & W10mobile: Settings > Ease of Access > High Contrast - Works perfectly.

I think we also need a mode for left handed OzBargainers…

  • Pointless and silly request, since even if implemented it only changes this one site.

If you don't like it bright when your ambient light levels are low, then turn down the screen brightness or enable "AUTO brightness" on your phone/tablet settings.

In that way, it solves all websites, not just one.

Phone brightness is different to having a black background and white text.

      • Oh, I never thought of that. However if you want your phone to look that way, simply change the DISPLAY accordingly.

It's pointless changing ONE website (like Ozbargain)… what about if (shock horror) a phonecall comes in, or a (OMG) text message? Will your retinas be incinerated by the blast of LCD pixel transparency that causes the backlight to show though?

What about searching Google, or even the bookmarks page that you use? How will you make all those other sites usable by your nocturnally adapted and dilated pupils?

What happens if you are searching Ozbargain and you see a deal that you like… what will you do? Will you require that every deal's linked website is also changed to some perverse reverse colour mode? Will you want an icon that indicates if the linked deal has the night mode available as an option?

Surely it is easier to do the logical thing and adjust your phone to display what you want on ALL it's screens, rather than making this one website change to suit you?

In other words, rather than wasting web developer's time… if you want "night mode" then enable it on your device. It's not hard, truly.

A flippant thought - if your phone is in night mode and you encounter a website with night mode, would that make the 2 cancel each other out, and flip it back to day again?

        • How do you change the display settings on an iPhone? Never needed or wanted too before so don't know. Is it easy to change back in the morning?

        • @TheClipIt:

Swipe up from the bottom of the screen, tap on the "sun" icon

More info on adjusting it here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202613

You can also use Accessibility to invert the colours, and set it to (say) triple-tap home to toggle it on and off.

Or add an App to do it.

Or use a browser that includes it.

        • @llama: night shift is different from a night mode, it gives the screen an orange tint. Might have a try with invert colours but it inverts everything ( so your avatar is blue and my emoji is green.).

          I dunno. And frankly I don't care.

Apples Night shift's colour can be adjusted in settings. Myself, I don't WANT my device to have white text on a black background, so I see no need for it and it can be assumed that iOS developers don't see it as a high priority either.

What I do know is that asking for a single website to change their stylesheets simply to fix some bizarre "want" is poorly thought through and doesn't solve the actual problem anyway.

If you want specialised things like this, then it needs to be handled at device level, so that it's applied to ALL your activities when using the device.

There are apps for Android that can manage it - so if you cannot do it what you need with your iDevice then you'll have to change platforms. I am sure Apple will notice the loss, and will instantly add the feature… NOT.

  • any updates? reddit finally implemented nightmode!

    • any updates?

Sorry. Not really on our roadmap.

      reddit finally implemented nightmode

We'll surely put nightmode in priority once Tencent lends us 300 million dollars.

      • Nevermind. The firefox extension works ok for most websites. Thanks though
