I love Russian literature. Most of the authors are basket cases writing these dismal, disturbing works. Crime and Punishment, Dead Souls, Notes from the Underground, Oblomov, Gulag Archipelago, The Master & Marguerita…

Not many people know the original title for War and Peace was "War, what is it good for?"

    • What is that noise?! /infuriatedrussian

    • Lol, Seinfeld.

  • Love Dostoyevsky. Notes from the Underground is a stand out for me.

+1 even though I have the hardcopy books already :P

  • Well, of course, my favourite is "The Raw Youth". It's basically where Dostoyevsky goes on to explain how science can't really find answers for the deeper human need.

I'd be Russian to get this, if I were you. Just Putin your shopping basket and pull the trigger. It would be a Crimea not to.

If you don't, I'll be seeing Ukraine about it later on.

Arent most of these normally free anyway?

Yes! Copyright in the US (where Amazon is based) expired 50 years after the author died although they recently increased it to 75 years or something to protect some early Walt Disney work from going into the public domain. This was nick named the 'Mickey Mouse Amendment' - no I am not making that up.

Australian and British copyright law is similar. I have no idea what the copyright law is in Russia LOL!

But, yes these are all now in the public domain and can be downloaded from Project Guttenberg and other legal free databases.

If it's a new translation or something then the new bits are protected by copyright.

      • Amazon just loves taxing people for free content.

    Thanks OP!
The au links for "The Light Shines in Darkness" and "Master and Man" are pointing at the US site however.

    Great stuff.
Looks like your US and AUS link for The Light Shines in Darkness has been swapped.

It tells me "This title is not currently available for purchase" when going to that link.

      • Works for me after I have logged in…

    • quite a few other titles are listed as free but, as Limberfuture says, they are not available for purchase

    • that's my favourite FD book, but alas it gives me the same message when I try to buy.

  • thanks OP
