probably not a good idea to start with a kogan product as your first post

    • +2

      Why not ?

      • +2

well the 55 inch one i bought is the worst tv ive ever bought.never again

  • No deal, the 50 inch SONY was this price a few days ago.

    • you mean the 48" Sony smart tv for $498 which pretty much sold out straight away?

anyways there's a 50" changhong from Bing Lee for $438 which I posted a couple of days ago too if you wanna compare chinese apples to chinese apples

      • I guess good thing with changhong compared to kogan is 3 year warranty.

    • Got a link for that?

  • Anyone know what the input lag on these tvs are like? I wanna get one for an Xbone, and since theres no way of finding out what the input lag is like (emailed Kogan, got a non answer about response time which was bullshit) I was wondering if anyone had experience with this tv for gaming.

    • I bought one of these last week, and although I haven't used it for gaming (I'm a PC gamer), it's OK for general viewing. Certainly not the best quality screen, but to my eyes at least, reasonable enough.
Using a PC as a media centre attached to this TV, so have no need for the addon features like PVR,etc, however I have noticed a slight bit of lag from the input controls.
Never expected it to compare against the bigger name brands, and at half the price, I have no complaints. Later on, when I do shell out for drool worthy Samsung, this will go in the mancave.

I'll attach a console on to it let you know how it goes. Failing that, I now actually have a reason to try Steams Big Screen feature

    • Alright, tested with a PS2 (I know, ancient, but as I said, I'm a PC gamer) and played God of War 2, Need for Speed:Underground and Castlevania (third person version, not the side scroller)
Had no lag at all on those games at all, though I was given several brutal reminders on why I stopped playing console games, and 50" LED glory, those second gen graphics look crude
Didn't test with Steam, as the Media PC doesn't have a grunty enough video card for games, and I didn't feel like unplugging and lugging the game PC to the lounge - not that would have been much of an indicative test, as my PC is way more specced than a console.

Not sure if that gives you a definitive answer or not, but hope it helps.

      • Hey, thanks man. I appreciate the response. Is there any way you could test a pc game or two? Maybe an fps? I don't wanna ask too much of you, but It would be very helpful if you could. Either way, cheers for the effort man.

Oh, and if you do end up testing your gaming rig with it, could you try the hdmi input. Thats where the lag will be, the hdmi ports.

        • OK, so I tested the game PC on the TV, and the results were as follows:
          All tests were at 1920*1080 @ 60hz
PC graphic settings are all set at High/Ultra

Guild Wars 2 - did a champion boss battle with lots of other player, with the ensuing graphical mayhem. Spells, arrows, explosions and spider legs abound.

          Result: No graphical lag

Blur - raced through several maps and made sure I smashed into other cars to get spun around, flipped around and tossed in the air. Much fun.

          Result: No graphical lag

Wolfentstein - The New Order: Fought my way through London Nautica, ensuring that explosions, blood, bullets, helicopters and water sprinklers were all in play. Set to Death Incarnate for extra mayhem.

Result: Very very slight lag, barely noticeable, but I was making sure the game was being all that it could be. If you're a hell for leather type gamer, it might be bother you.
Colour palette was slighty gritter too, but I had forgotten to set the TV to Game mode, so YMMV

I wasn't able to test it via HDMI, as my graphic card requires a mini HDMI adapter, which I do not have, so I used the VGA port instead.

So, for games and the like, I was not able to discern any lag on the model I have. As noted before, menus are a little laggy, but that's not a deal breaker for me.

        • @Magpye: Sorry, totally forgot to respond. Thanks for the help man, I appreciate the tests you did. Unfortunately I need to know if the hdmi inputs are laggy, since thats what I'd be using. I'm pretty sure the vga input would have less lag, so while your tests are helpful, they don't tell me the whole story.

I still really appreciate your efforts, man. If anyone else out there has had any experience with this tv, specifically the hdmi ports, have you noticed any input lag?

  • I'd like to know if it has a "dot by dot" setting aka pixel mapping via HDMI? Stream alot of TV from the laptop so wouldn't by a tv without it these days.

    • +1

It does have a dot by dot mode. I didn't know what it was, so haven't used it

User manual can be found here:
      www.kogan.com/media/files/usermanuals/KALED50XXXZA-A.pdf

      • Thanks Magpye, Dot by dot aspect ratio just mirrors your screen dot for dot, it's a great feature; I'd take it over 4k, smart tv or 3d features if it was an either/or choice :) I did check the manual but it didn't seem to be in there so your input is invaluable.

Unfortunately the free shipping offer has expired but I'll put this one on my list and if it goes free ship again at this price I'll grab it :).

        • are you talking about overscan? if it's not in the normal menu settings (unlikely) then it should be in the service menu (provided you're able to get the code for it)

        • @CVonV: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overscan

"As overscan reduces picture quality, it is undesirable for 1080i and 1080p sets;[3] therefore, *1:1 pixel mapping is preferred.[4]"

          *aka "dot-by-dot"

        • @zappa:

yes i know.. and usually you will find the 1:1 pixel mapping in the "overscan" settings is what i meant

      • Kogan help finally came back and said it doesn't have a dot-by-dot mode.

  • It'd be nice if someone could test it but I believe you as the owner with the screenshot (thanks!) over a rep who has probably never seen this TV.

It'd be nice if they had one TV of each model in their call centres but it's pretty obvious they totally rely on the owners manuals which are hit and miss.

    Thanks Magpye :)

    • No worries, happy to help - plenty of people have saved me money on here, happy to return the favour in some way.
I actually grabbed a laptop and tested the HDMI settings, and you may have dodged a bullet on this one.
On the HDMI input, there is no Dot to Dot, only Full, Zoom and 4:3
It is on the PC (VGA) input that is has dot to dot, which is odd given the majority of laptops nowadays have HDMI ports.

Whilst I'm being frank and honest about the TV, I've noticed a couple of pixels that have stuck - I only see them when the screen goes totally black, but there they are, like little stars.
I'm no purist, so it doesn't bother me at all, but you're not getting a Samsung/Sony glory beast of a TV by any stretch.
