Best Use of Health Fund for Glasses

I have $150 in optical benefits with my health fund. Been needing new glasses for a while now. Can anyone recommend me the best specials currently on?

I live in Sydney, Bankstown.

Budgeting $300 out of my pocket (after $150 health fund and any other promotion the store might be offering). That's including the frame and lenses.

Thanks.

What health fund? Have you had a look at Specsavers?

  • Bought my last glasses online and was positively surprised. Less that half of the price I would have paid in store. Ray Ban with quality glasses for less than $250. Still got the refund from the insurance. Just wanted to mention it, because a few months back I would not have even thought about buying glasses online. Would always buy it online now.

    • Where did you buy it from? And how did you go about the medical claim?

        I bought it from www.visiondirect.com.au

I went to a local optician (at Specsavers) and paid $65 for the eye test. They didn't really like it, when I asked for a copy of my test results, but they are required to give you the results if you ask. They probably know that you need it for an online shop…

Uploaded the prescription details from the eye test to Visiondirect (they got good reviews on Facebook and are a big company, no previous experience with them) and claimed the $65 from my health insurer.

Received the glasses a few days later. Comes with a handy repair and lens cleaning kit. You can also download a letter/invoice which you can forward to your insurer for the claim.

They produce the glasses in Hong Kong, which I was a skeptical about first, but gave it a try anyway. Very glad I did, because quality was convincing and price awesome. So I am happy to recommend them.

Your annual eye test is bulk billed through Medicare, so I don't get the $65 payment.

We use Specsavers, and get a copy of the test, and get two pairs of reading glasses for free.
Last year they threw in transition lenses for free.

We then ordered multi-focal transition lens glasses from http://www.zennioptical.com/ at around A$60 delivered, using the Specsavers eye test copy.

Will be doing it again next week, as the new calendar year starts :-)

        • @ChrisLevo:
That's right. The $65 are billed through Medicare. I was on a visa before (no Medicare), which is why I mixed it up.

  • I think atm I prefer to buy in store. Not confident with buying prescription glasses online. However, I'll still look into it thanks.
