Windows 8.1 slow Internet or drop outs constantly

So I got two computers running windows 8.1 and both are near brand new with one of them having this issue from day one of purchased.

Wireless adaptor latest drivers been installed.

Both have wireless n

It's only these computers that are having issues because on both my Mac's,gaming consoles and mobiles have no problem connecting to the internet without slow loading or drop outs.

It has to be some windows 8.1 issue.

If anyone can help that'll be great.

Internet drops out while you are actually doing something or after being idle for a few minutes?
If the latter then look for some power saving settings that may be associated… in control panel.

  • I'd run a cable directly to the modem (remove any wireless bits).
That'll tell you whether it's an issue with the wireless network in your house
If it's still an issue, it's either slow/crap internet, or something strange on your computer/computers.
Check all machines for viruses, and contact your ISP advising that you've tried the above and it's still dropping out. They'll be able to check whether your modem is losing connection (Sync) with the exchange (down the road)

    Good luck

    • Both computers are working fine now.
I have changed it to connect to the 5Ghz freq instead of 2.4ghz which was the one that had the dropouts and slow/timeout pages.
      Thanks for you help.

      • Great to hear. Thanks for letting us know the outcome.

  • happening with just the computer would mean that it's something to do with the computer. i wouldn't be checking with isp since it's isolated to the computer

as above, run a cable and see if it happens still, if it does, that means settings on the computer or something (virus etc), if it doesn't, means wifi issue (whether settings or card).

op if its a wifi problem, you said that you have updated to the latest drivers, maybe you want to try un-installing and reinstalling the drivers while you're connected by cable.

  • This reminds me of my old Toshiba. It was running with Atheros wifi & did just as you're saying. I thought I must have some sort of interference or that the card was just total shite…Then, one day I decided to try a different set of drivers—>i.e. NOT the Toshiba drivers but some I found searching online for the Atheros wifi model card I had.

    BINGO!

    Worked perfectly, ever after.

In addition to that possible lead/fix, you might also try uninstalling the current drivers after having downloaded the drivers for Win 7 & your original version. Choose the option to remove the software (so it doesn't reinstall automatically). Right click the Win 7 drivers & choose "compatibility" for Win 7 as administrator. If no joy, you can try reinstalling the 8 drivers once more.

    Good luck

  • Also have you tried different browsers? if your problem is present when browsing.

    • All Browers are the same.

I finally got it back to normal now.

My Router has two channels. 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz.

All my devices use the 2.4Ghz with all my devices. When i switch to the 5Ghz every things fast again and no more drop outs.

      • Try a phone app like wifi analyser to see what channels are used around your home. You might find your neighbours are on the same 2.4 channel as you and that is causing the problems.

  • Have you tried using the default plug and play drivers? They are usually the ones that have been tested more thoroughly.
