CPU Q9xxx Series

Hi guys

Im searching for a bargain for Intel Q9400, Q9550 or Q9650. Does anyone know where is a good place to get a bargain? Ive read from reviews that its not worth to get the Q9650 cos its too expensive as compared to the Q9550, and its not worth the money. I that true?

I currently have a Q8200 with 4GB ram (kingston) with XP-32bit and sometimes it my computer froze. i was thinking of getting a better processor. Any views on that? Thanks so much guys!

Hmmm, if your computer is freezing up, it's not likely to be a processor issue (unless of course its faulty or something). I'd look in to getting that sorted then see if you really need an upgrade.

A Q8200 will generally cover most things people use a computer for and the performance difference between Q8200 and Q9XXX series probably isn't worth the upgrade IMO.

  • well, it seems to freeze when im running 4-5 documents of MS Words 07 and 3 PDF files simultaneously, with msn running at the background. thats not supposed to freeze with a quad core?! i was doing that on my C2D and it was fine.. do u know what might constitute to freezing?

by the way, i jus bought the processor 3 weeks ago!

    • Freezing can be caused by many things.
The first thing I would look at would be the power supply, not the CPU. A power supply which is not powerful enough can cause the problem you describe.
How many watts is your power supply?

  • its 600W APEVIA Dark Side Power. i have 2 HDD; 1 Sata, 1 IDE, 1 DVD drive, 1 nvidia 9600gt and 2X24 inch monitor connected as dual screen.

For what you're doing, your current set up should handle that just fine.

You may want to check that it's not a software glitch thats causing the freeze.
I recently picked up an ASUS 1005HA-P for myself and a mate, he experienced blue screens on his netbook, while mine was fine. A big dose of driver, bios and program updates seems to have fixed it. Prolly wouldn't hurt to run the usual virus and malware scanners too.

  • damn! how's his netbook now? i too jus got an 1005HA-P recommended by u actually.. lol.. few months back when u got from the US. I sometimes get a freeze on my netbook if i type really fast for a period of time. ive realise a few got that problem too in the forums. u experienced the same thing?

yea, ive checked all that on my desktop and updated all the drivers to the latest. ive jus narrowed down the problem.. it freezes if i have 2 monitors on at the same time multitasking with 4-5 documents of MS Words 07 and 3 PDF files simultaneously, with msn running at the background. does that mean my ram or graphic card has cant support the 'weight'?

by the way, i THINK i just got a bargain, to swap my q8200 to a q9400 and add an additional $80bucks for it. do u guys think its a bargain??

    • Rule out software/driver issues before you start worrying about hardware dude, it's way cheaper, and far more likely! Get a linux live disk (Ubuntu etc) and fire that up, load up your system in the same way as you do with windows and see if it falls over! ;)

Grab yourself a copy of Hiren's bootdisk v10, there's a bunch of diagnostics on it you can run to help rule out hardware conflicts/failures, a fantastic live miniXP OS and plenty to help you get ready for backup/rebuild if necessary! :)

Throwing any money at hardware ATM, especially CPU, for this problem would be an utter waste IMHO! ;)

    • After the updates and whatnot, the netbook is running very smooth… mate even thinks the battery life has improved!

One of the things I did do was remove a lot of the preloaded Asus stuff that came with it, maybe you could try that and see if it fixes the netbook prob?

'multitasking with 4-5 documents of MS Words 07 and 3 PDF files simultaneously, with msn running at the background'
I could do that with my old system running an E6600, 2Gb RAM and an ancient R9800… it bogged down a little, but never froze up. How long do you have, after you open up all those programs, before it freezes up?

Similar to the netbook prob, did you install anything just before you began to experience these issues? There could well be a conflict/glitch in that program causing the problem, especially if it loads anything during start up.

One last thing you could do is open up task manager and keep an eye on the performance tab while you do all that multitasking. If you notice the RAM usage at a consistently high level, you could flick across to the Processes tab and check if there is a particular process that is sucking up a huge amount of memory. If there is then it could be the cause of the freeze as well.

  • Definitely don't bother upgrading your CPU. Yours is already a pretty new quadcore and the 9xxx series isn't much of a step up (only higher cache).
