No Internet connection. What alternatives I can choose? Any good deal?

I just moved into a new place and was told by my current(old place) ISP that their ports at the new place was used up and I had to wait.

So I wonder what other options i have. At the moment, I am thinking of buying a WiFi portable data modem, like $10 for 3g data someone listed a few weeks ago.

Any comments? What is the cheapest datapack I can get at the moment? $20for 3g with Vodafone?

  • 3g data or 3 gigabytes of data?

…the 3GB for first month is a pretty good deal.

Also, do you have a smartphone? Consider getting more data for your phone and then turn on the hotspot function. You should be able to try this right now and see if it works.

Another possibility is cable broadband (not DSL). I don't know much about it, but it may only be available through Optus? Maybe try this link:

    http://www.optus.com.au/shop/broadband/home-broadband

    • No any connection available st this place including cable.
I did use my phone as a hotspot, but 1gbis being used up very quickly. I will have a look how much virgin will charfevme for extra data.

      • Consider switching to Yatango or Amaysim. They have some good options for plenty of data without the big price tag.

Amaysim will give you 5gb and unlimited calls/texts for $45 per month.

        • +1

I'd steer clear of Amaysim for data. Data sessions are charged at a minimum of 1MB. Nearly everyone else uses a minimum of 1kb sessions.

A new data session occurs when your phone connects to a new tower or changes between 2g/3g/HSDPA/4g.

In real world use the 5gb Amaysim quota wotks out to be around 3gb.

Is Vivid wireless an option where you are?

    • Cable is available through Optus or Telstra, depends on who has the infrastructure in the area. This may change with the latest NBN deal, but it won't be straight away.

I have seen some Optus mobile plans offering 8gb of data, definitely an expensive way of doing it though.

maybe? latency will probably be crap, but eh

make sure you read reviews on WP

  • Nbn satellite has been closed for new connections for quite a while now, even then you had to prove that 3g was unavailable.
They haven't even got a slot for the two new satellites to be launched into, so that will be a while off for those who desperately need it…

OP, have you checked www.mynbn.info for any fibre or fixed wireless coverage built or in planning for your area?

Other than that its just down to searching for a good mobile Internet deal.

  • Also … call Telstra and ask if there are any ports in quarantine and find out when they will become available. They use to quarantine ports for 6 months in case the resident decided that they wanted internet at their address again. Not sure if they still do this, but I was working at Westnet at the time and one of the provisioning guys managed to get a date from Telstra for me. Finally had internet after 9 months.

HATE Telstra RIMs with a passion.

  • Pretty sure you can tether with the woollies sim.
I think it's something like $30 for 5gb of data and $250 worth of calls (bonus)
    Might be worth a look

  • find a neighbour with a good unlimited wifi connection and ask if you can chip some cash their way to share it?

  • Thanks guys. After some research, it seems this us a tpg issue. They used up all the ports Telstra allocate to them in thus area. Telstra doesn't have an issue to install a phone line for MW. What I will probably do is to talk to dodo (their unlimited ADSL bundle is as good as my tpg's in previous address) to find out if they have vacant port for me. If yes, I will go with them.
Another option is just get a phone line with Telstra, and ask from any ISP.
