Melbourne to LAX to Vietnam in November, 2015

Hi guys!

I currently reside in Melbourne, and I'm planning to fly up to LA in November, 2015 for an event and holiday. We're also looking to go to Texas (have family there) and maybe check out Atlanta, Georgia. Flying date is kind of flexible, just need to be there by November 9-10.

Then we're planning to visit Vietnam afterwards, either at the end of November or early December.

Vietnam is less of a concern as we haven't been there, but does anyone here have experience with purchasing tickets to LA during that time and do you guys know when would be the best time to purchase tickets? Most sales I'm seeing now are for March-June, so I know it's still early days… and also, tell me about your experience there in November. What's the weather like?

I'm planning to go with my father and I, and we're waiting for a good sale to jump on the opportunity.

I'd wait until the expo's are on as they have really good deals on flights and accommodation. Bought return tickets (direct flight) to melbourne with qantas for $1400 when the expo was on and saved heaps on hotel accommodation also. Think the melbourne expo was around may-june from memory but they're on yearly

  • Just came back from USA in November this year. Used the AirNZ $300 off deal and booked my flights last-minute in October. I looked at booking one-way flights but it would have cost me wayyy more. For some reason with all the cheap flights to USA it seems you have to book return flights. On that basis I suspect it could be cheaper for you to fly back to MEL and then fly onwards to Vietnam, but that is assuming you will get a cheap return airfare.

Since you know you are aren't going for 11 months, it is probably wise to just see if any good sales come up in the next few months. But when there is an airline sale try not to delay and miss out on the dates/low price. The dates I looked at were $1049 AUD return, but I hesitated to book and then when I did book the price went up to $1149. Still pretty good deal though I think.

I also went from LAX to Texas. Used Spirit Airlines (budget airline) for about 95 USD (including bags), They fly direct from LAX to Dallas and to Houston. Flight was one hour late and arrived at 1 am but it was fine. Just know that with Spirit you have to pay for carry-on baggage, and paying for checked bags is cheaper. If you don't pay in advance then you pay $100 at the airport! The way they structure their fares, a checked bag is generally less expensive than a carry-on bag. If you are travelling with a whole family it will probably be cheaper if you sign up to become a 'member'.

As for Weather in Texas in November, well I was there in early November. Amarillo in the north was a little like a Melbourne winter. It rained in San Antonio and felt like Sydney winter, Austin was a little warmer. Weather in Dallas was perhaps a little warmer than Melbourne winter but still colder than Sydney. But that is just my limited experience of a few days in each place. Best to look at those charts with average minimum and maximum.

Weather in Los Angeles in mid-November felt just like South-East QLD in mid-May.

  • I'm doing the same, Melbourne to LA in November. Still haven't purchased flights yet and with the sales as of late, was wondering when was the best time to really look out for sales and people's thoughts on specific airlines? This will be my longest flight yet and I'm a little wary.
