I will never understand expensive shaving practices

It's a hobby for many. Personally I wouldn't spend this much on a brush though.

I got into proper shaving half a year ago. Best decision I made. Currently using double-edged razor, basic synthetic brush and lime shaving soap - every shave I have now is bloody incredible!

Definitely give it a shot… the basic starter kits (double-edged razors, but maybe not quite yet for cutthroats*) are quite inexpensive (if I remember correctly, the very first kit I bought was from the shaver shop at $20 - included the razor, 5 blades and a small brush).

However, I agree with Cyb3r. That's a fair bit to shell out for a brush..

For anyone that wants more traditional boar hair, you can get premium quality Semogue brushes from EBay. Very happy with my 1305 for $20! http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Semogue-1305-Shaving-Brush-Handma…

This doesn't seem like a good deal. I paid $40 for a Silvertip Badger hair brush (Frank shaving brand) on eBay a couple of years ago. I assume they can still be gotten for that price.

Wow, that is a cheap way to get badger on your face.

Agree with many of the above comments. $40 for a synthetic brush is not a deal, particulary when you can get a boar hair brush for cheaper, and even a reasonable badger hair brush for a bit more. There's so many around that there's not much point listing other options here. Google will no doubt find them…

I was looking at purchasing this brush due to it's reputation of being a natural fibre killer, yet during research, I cam across the above link, demonstrating the companies morals are far from what I consider acceptable, so purchased a Simpsons Classic 1 instead.
At least Mark @Simpsons works to satisfy customers.

As for some comments made here, traditional/wet shaving is cheaper, both in the short and long term, if you can refrain from oneupmanship and purchase samples to try, rather than the retail product.
The difference in quality and performance between traditional methods and modern equivalent using electric or cartridges and goop is amazing and it's also far better for the skin.
This is a cheap brush compared to the several hundred dollar offerings from the brush manufacturer, Plisson.
I personally would recommend a 1805 Semogue if you are going to purchase a boar, yet it will take a few months to fully break in and still be more upon the scratchy/scritchy side than a decent badger or a third or fourth generation synthetic fibre brush.

If genuinely interested, drop into and bug the folks at http://paste-and-cut.com.au with questions and inquiries.
There are well versed folks there that I learned a lot from just lurking.

Shaver Shop are over priced and afford abysmal after sales service at best.

  • Shaving brushes are fantastic, even if you use it with a normal cartridge razor. The lather is great, and the shaving soap is quite cheap as it lasts for ages compared to aerosol or gel foams. Highly recommend getting one, the brush also makes it easy to apply evenly. That said, this one seems like a lot to pay for a synthetic brush, there are plenty of better value offerings out there
