Help with Buying a NAS
Comments
I would recommend a raspberry pi. It would cost you 40$+ HD
Happy with synology. Runs everything I need low power and quite.
+1 also very easy to use. Works straight out of the box no need for complicated setup
Can I ask which model of Synology is this, please?
DS 413j I think this model has been superseded. My advice is if budget allows choose a model with an Intel processor, as the marvell processor is a bit slow.
@teardrops21: Thanks.
After owning and selling Thecus for a long time I'm a big fan especially for Media Server use with Serviio, the N5550 fits your budget although I can't comment too much on it as I haven't sold that particular model yet. Certainly at that price range you won't be transcoding video on the fly with the Atom processor.
I have an N7700PRO here and have read and written data off it at over 120MB/s over an aggregated dual LAN link so it's plenty fast. I also know the 4800ECO units are great as we sell them the most.
HOWEVER
paulsterio makes a great suggestion. I haven't tried one yet as I was disappointed with HP's G range of small business servers, but the N54L Micro Server always catches my attention at trade events as a great little server for home use. HOWEVER. They are BARE BONE not only hard disk wise but software wise as well so if you're going that way make sure you understand a little about installing operating systems.
Other devices sold as NAS come pre-installed with OS.
Start with Illmatic…
For that budget, your best bet is an HP N54L. Running FreeNAS, it's infinitely more flexible than any other NAS you can find in its price range. It's also quite cheap for what it can do. It's a 4-bay NAS, but you can put another drive in the ODD slot, so it's essentially 5 bays.
