ZoneAlarm will be giving away free licenses to ZoneAlarm Pro on 13 Oct 2009 for 24 hours only.
I am guessing that it will start at midnight in USA.
Usual price is USD 39.95 for 3pcs for 1 year.

Edit: Corrected spelling mistake (typed it at 3am)
Time Comparison: at 10am Aussie time, it's 4pm on Monday in US. Which means it will strike midnight there at 6pm here.
Might want to read the comments/opinions about the software below.

Edit: 1:04am 14 Oct: Just started
Need to enter credit card number to complete order for $0.00, bit retarded.

edit: 1:17am
Haha I found out that the catch is that your credit card is set up for auto-renewal.
I signed up, got the license key and then deleted my credit card details here

Plus there have been persistent rumours of a backdoor in Zonealarm.

Plenty of other free programs about without the poor reputation.

Yeah i dont like Zonealarm. What Firewall/Anti-Virus is a better one?

    • I use outpost which is a great firewall, although the anti-virus is not the best. Comodo is great for a free firewall.

Commodo firewall + AVG Antivirus. Both have free versions

      • Where do you find uninstaller for Comodo stuff? Never install coz if you ever run into trouble it is nightmare to get rid off this stuff. Just try to google Comodo uninstall if you do not believe what I have written!

        • 1- CD to personal firewall installation folder
2- type "fwconfig -uninstall" from the command line
          3- restart Windows
          4- Manually delete all files

  • I tried their top two suites last time they were being sold cheap and I have to say they are really bad. I'm a computer tech so have a reasonably wide experience of the different brands.

  • MS Security Essentials… is also free. Does the job for me.

    • Security Essentials doesn't have a firewall. You would be using Windows firewall.

  • what's wrong with Windows Firewall?

  • You should consider Online Armor - I switched to it from ZoneAlarm Pro. And it's developed in Australia too! www.tallemu.com

  • Been using Zonealarm pro for a few years. Was using Nortons and Mcafee on 2 PCs when both were infected with a virus. Took 2 weeks for Mcafee to pick it up and Nortons still hadnt by the time I switched products. When I researched this topic, Zonealarm Pro got the best overall performer - Zonealarm uses the Kaspersky AV and their own firewall. Any more info on the backdoor or other problems?
I did have the Kaspersky Internet security package on one PC, but I didnt like their antispam product - crashes regularly and basically doesnt pick up any spam. Also very expensive comparatively.
I have heard the new bitdefender is a good package - any comments?

  • You can get Kaspersky Internet Security under $30 on ebay. Just over from an Australian online store.

    • I bought Kaspersky via ebay a few years ago and it turned out I was sold a pirated key. took 2 months to be blacklisted….just when the paypal insurance had run out.

  • I use Comodo + Avira Antivir. Malwarebytes for periodic system scans (All free). Here's hoping one day the best in all areas (Firewall, Anti-vir, malware) will be in one package ;-)

ZoneAlarm's security suite isn't bad, and for free for the full version is a pretty good deal. I've been evaluating a bunch of security suites for work over the last couple of years, and so far I'm liking Trend's new one (rated well in Australian PC User's last review, too). AVG free is okay. Not great, though - too many cripples in the free version. McAfee's suite is okay too, but not great - not enough fine tuning for my taste in certain elements of the program. It's also not as vigilant as I'd like. I used to love NOD32 but Eset's Australian distributor (where their website redirects for purchasing from an Australian IP) is charging crap prices for one PC versions whereas the rest of the world get better rates for 3 PC versions! The base model ZA firewall is still pretty good, and it also doesn't have the excessive nag messages that freak out people who aren't terribly computer literate that are a 'feature' of the ZoneLabs security suite products. If anyone has any EVIDENCE of a security hole/backdoor in ZoneLabs' products, please provide it - otherwise quite spreading baseless rumours.

    • I think the backdoor people are referring to is the ZA phone home function (without asking - via http port) which is what I noticed happening and I assume they verify your key each day and is the reason why the newer versions cannot be cracked using a keygen since it quickly recognises it (what is going to stop your firewall from reaching out heh?), but I don't think they are doing anything malicious or collecting shady data on people, so I'm still using the free zap from last year and this one comes in handy now to get another year as I only have just over a month left and was going to move to Comodo (just used to zap, had it for many years now, so I can't go backwards and have the limited free version)

When will it start? At the moment I use the free Zone Alarm. It's good.

It just started, but it requires you to register and enter your credit card details. That's a downer for me.

    • Yep, why the heck do they need credit card details? Can't they just use an email address to validate/spam us like other vendors? Not worth the effort for me now given the free alternatives.

  • yes, need CC details…but as it's free though, i ordered one, hopefully with no CC surcharge for that.
    it says:
    Refund Policy
ZoneAlarm products are eligible for return within 30 days of the purchase date. Not applicable to Beta products.

  • becareful, it's auto-renewal, don't forget to delete ur CC info when finished the order.

  • License valid for one year (10/13/09 to 10/14/10) only.. then you got to pay / uninstall.

  • ehm…zone alarm not for me.
Anyone has discount/bargain for Avira premium security suite, please let me know. Thanks

  • this is the firewall product only - no AV.

  • Comodo have a very good free Internet Security suite.

    http://www.comodo.com/home/internet-security/free-internet-s…

  • filseclab is way better and only 8mb in total

  • I dunno what you guys are on about but I only input name, surname (both bogus) and an e-mail address and have received my key on that e-mail, no credit card details whatsoever (I simply pressed the big download button which opened a window with Name - Surname - Email - Confirm Email and that was that)
