Woolworths stock clearance discount changed

Has anyone else noticed that the scrooge is coming out in Woolworths lately. There seems to be a distinct change in the discount applied to clearing stock. ie close to best before date.
The latest confirmation was when I went down tonight (xmas eve) to grab some cheap deli stuff and they were only offering 25% of which in the past years has been 50%.
This got me thinking to other mark downs I noticed recently that were not marked down by as much as they used to be. It seems that 25% is now their maximum which is not much different to some of their specials.

I must thank woolies though because now I dont get too carried away with the mark down products and hence spend less. I walked away this xmas eve with just a small amount of ham and I could tell I wasnt the only one in the shop left a bit surprised. There was no mad rush at the deli and I can assume a lot of meat left to be thrown out.

Why should they discount to 50% if they can price it at 25% and still move it before the due date?

They probably realised lots of people (including myself) like to wait til certain times to buy things, but we end up buying them in any case.

Depends on the store (store manager), department manager and stock availability - not woolworths as a whole.

At my local woolies lots of packaged fruit/veg was reduced by 50% or more, 30% off deli salads, 50% off shaved meats and other things, 20% off turkeys, no discount on legs of ham :(

At my local woolies they had 80% off shaved meats in the evening then 90% later on in the night so it definitely varies. Presumably if it's a high turnover store they won't discount it as much compared to a quieter one.

@ my local coles, they sometime have stuff discounted @82%.

    • That's a very odd number to discount at…

or they also have 63% , 74% …etc Maybe they choose the price @ which they want to sell the reduced items , instead of the percentage and the barcode reader/printer then calculate the percentage when printing the new barcodes. Btw its the Coles in Mentone (on Mentone parade) . I'm not sure if they still do this though as I haven't been there in months. I live about 500m from a woolies and its so much easier to just walk there rather than drive all the way to Mentone parade.

        • Oh that clears it up. Seems a bit weird to have such odd numbers, because that would mean they would pretty much have a different discount percentage for almost every item that's being discounted. Thanks!

    Depends on the competition?

    agree
back then on a Friday night, they use to discount bread around 7pm
now even at 10 there is no discount bread

    • Wonder if it's because they just sell it the next day.

      • well they don't claim their bread as fresh like coles!

  • and here i was thinking 50% was a stingey discount for a short-dated item …

On the other hand, price on my local IGA is getting better and busier than before. I vote with my wallet.
eg A loaf of good brand bread is like $4+ in Woolies. Only discount sometimes when buying 2. My local IGA has a discounted brand weekly for under $3.50.
Some money is going back to the local community.
