I need an external DVD for my Mac - just to play DVD, not to burn or anything. I tried buying a cheap one from Ebay but it failed to open the disc the first time I tried using it and the wouldn't even open up to release the disc. Where can a get an external DVD at a reasonable price that won't be dodgy?

External DVD RW- Samsung $27 / Asus $35 / LG GP70NS50 $54 / LG GP50NW40 $33
The issue with the PCCG drive is that for some computers you need to connect it to two USB ports and my Mac only has two USB ports and they are on opposite sides
I would think the PCCG one and the MSY one would be the same…
Not too sure if there are any with only one USB plug as I'd reckon the drive will need quite abit of power, more then one USB port can provide at a time.

Don't buy the cheap unbranded ones from eBay, they are actually pulls from dead laptops, meaning the drives are old/used ones.
Buy a new one from MSY or some brick/mortar computer shop.
Define "reasonable price".
Cheapest, reliable source would be around $29 from PCCG
Where you decide to buy it would be up to you but PCCG is my go to for checking prices for computer parts. (MSY website is a pain to navigate IMO)
