Laptop Cooling Stand / Pad - recommended Brand /Model ?

Have an old HP 630 Laptop that gets very hot on the front left quarter underside of unit - where air outlet/inlet is located. Needs a service but seeking anyone's valued experience that could suggest any good reliable models of Cooling Pad/stand ?

    Can I suggest the following instead….

    How to clean cooling system of HP 635: cleaning cooling module and replacement of thermal paste

  • Hi , I am a bit new to this. Thanks for the instructions. I'm not super confident in taking apart laptop though. I was really looking at short term support before I can put it in for service as I also have some software issues, and wanted to have it serviced by technician.

    • Overheating will cause a raft of other problems including shortening its life, and damage to internals &drives.. Best to get it looked at sooner rather then later. The most noticeable is the laptop will throttle (slow itself down) to protect itself from burning out.

      Laptop cooling pad will just keep it cooler on your legs and wont really fix the problem at hand.

      Just my 2cents.

    @JohnnyQuest:

    Short term, step 1) use some sort of tape to cover all vents except the intake directly under the fan & the exhaust on the side of the laptop.
    Step 2) with the laptop laying belly-up, use a non-metal object to push into the fan intake grill in order to keep the blade from spinning in step 3.
    Step 3: using the vacuum, whatever end (or no end) gives the most suction— run it back & forth over the fan intake grill. If you're fortunate, you'll get the dust clog to pull free & through the grill.

    I've taken apart many over-heating laptops & what I find is a rectangular, sponge-like, chunk of compacted dust sitting against the exhaust port. Basically, dust gets sucked into the intake area but doesn't make it out the exhaust port. Vacuuming is the first thing I try. I use a small, but powerful, hand-held unit which is bagless- so I see when the clog of dust comes through. *You can fascilliate moving the blockage by blowing canned air into the exhaust as you suction from the intake grill. Keep in mind that this is removing the dust blockage only & does not address whether your thermal paste has become ineffective. But, it's easy enough to try?

    Onto cooling pads. Personally, I think anything is better than nothing—> but if you're shopping, look for a pad which has at least one fan (two is better) which is USB powered & if possible, USB ports on the unit itself (to make up for the one you lose plugging it in). There are many brands & styles. If you need it portable, look for one that folds flat. Jaycar has this one: http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=XC5211

    Logitech makes good products & are reputable. Otherwise, check local computer shops for something that looks & feels solid to you.

    HTH :)
