Best book for beginner investor

Hi All,

I am about to make my first plunge as an investor. Ive read several books on different theories of analysis, strategies etc.
However I am now looking for the best book to really attain some knowledge on how the whole process works i.e. how to actually purchase the shares, how to read the commsec indicators, the jargon etc.

Any ideas?

  • Paper trade first. Keep finger on pulse. Bloomberg TV.

Marcus Padley is a good intro. Market Wizards is another summary view.

Then whatever piques your interest on style of trading.

Could do an online course, but there so too many, hard part if sorting wheat from chaff.

Join investor forums. HotCopper is an Aussie one to start.

Don't invest in books, digital media is the future

    • Any particular recommendations based on my circumstances?

      • Sorry mate, ignore me. I was just trying to take the piss at your title, sounded like you wanted to invest in a book….

Go to (http://www.asx.com.au/) heaps of stuff under education.

    Also check out (https://www.belldirect.com.au/shareschool/)

I don't think there are in actually books to take you on the next step, just lots of information.

In answer to your question about the actual process
    - Open account with Broker - (I recommend Bell Direct)
    - Deposit money into account they will set up
    - Buy shares

    • Thank you Baysew. I have opened an account with Commsec and will start looking into your links

      • Also look at a ETF (Exchange Traded Fund) like STW or a LIC (Listed Investment Company) like AFI.

Both give a broad exposure of Australian shares.

If you don't have much (any) experience I'd recommend using one of the ASX fake money trial investor things, just so you can see what can happen to your money (both up and down!).

    • I'm actually looking at trying that out. I was wondering if you had done it what were your thoughts on it (or anyone else who has) also what you might recommend to do prior in terms of getting ready.
I currently don't know much about finance in general but am very keen to learn. I plan to do some reading/video watching about investments and similar areas before giving the trial a go. Looks like the ASX education center is a perfect start.

  • I came here to learn as well. Have accumulated enough saving to try making my money go the extra mile.

  • Im in a similar situation too and omfg all these terms and reading give me a headache.
