I'm looking at an Air Asia flight from ICN > KL > MEL and booking the two legs separately saves approximately $140. I'm assuming I would have to pick up my luggage and re-check them in but other than that would there be any other issues of booking separately. The layover time is about 7 hours which should be sufficient for the re-checkin and would also kill some waiting time.

If he books together and the first flight is delayed, air asia will move him to a new flight on the second leg.
Booking separately you run the risk of the first flight being cancelled or heavily delayed and you miss your second leg. Your travel insurance will probably cover you in this event though.
I often do it (3 - 4 times per year), and I have never had a problem. I would not do it with under a 3 hour connection. There are lots of AirAsiaX check in counters at Kul. I always worry about the immigration queues at KLIA2 but they are actually not too bad. For international flights to Australia from Kul, always go to the gate early, because the Aust. Immigration passport check takes up time, and also there can be long walks at KLIA2 terminal from/to gates.
Thanks for the replies. I booked the separately. Hopefully no issues. :)
Book separately. For some reason they always charge more when booked together. Maybe have a day or two stopover for sightseeing in KL.
make sure you don't put your phone on airplane mode, it might go missing.
I booked seperately PNH->KUL->HND saved about $100 (about 3hours in between).
No checked baggage.. went thru Transit… they waved me through; had boarding passes printed out already.
I guess if I didn't have the KUL->HND boarding pass I would have had to gone thru passport control at KUL and got one from a machine. (or maybe the transit counter could have done it… mmm… prolly could)
(I think you are paying for the baggage to be transfered automagically when you book together)
Thanks. That's good to know. I might have to manage my baggage better to avoid Immigration X 2 ! I think that the 'fly-thru' bookings are more expensive because they are charging you for 'convenience'. Discount carriers have to charge for all of the bits and pieces that they can in order to try to make an overall operating profit
Air Asia is a point to point carrier so even if you book them together there's no guarantee of a successful connection so go ahead and book separately.
