    Free = positive reviews and the book goes up the charts, then when they charge for it, all those positive reviews for a free book, make it look like they found it just as good for $5 or whatever they charge.

      Not to mention that it brings traffic to the website, maybe you look a bit, buy something else, check your credit, etc.. And then there's the good publicity of offering free products at all.
