  • Price is $149

  • I grabbed one first thing this morning! Seems a very good price for a convection microwave!

    • That good, but I still don't get how they can do it for so cheap. $149 is a HUGE price difference from the cheapest starting at $700.

      • I have no idea either… hopefully it actually works as expected! I'll give it a test run tonight. :)

      • BigW (Mistral) & Kmart (Homemaker) have both previously sold similar convection microwaves for similar prices, so whilst this is a good deal, it's not unheard of! ;)

I bought the former @ $148 and it's still going strong after nearly 3yrs (which coincidentally is the warranty period); and the Homemaker one at work is happily going on for 2yrs! ;)

  • wow convection as well for $149? I would expect ONLY a microwave at this price.

The cheapest convection ovens start at $700, so i'm surprised to see this for $149.

Anyone know if its any good?

    • Aldi foods are not bad (compared with prices) but Aldi home appliances are craps. I bought one microwave/convection like this from Aldi 2 years ago. It broke within the first week. Considering the cost of sending it back for warranty and collecting (and the quality as well), I just threw it away. I also had one convection only oven from Aldi and it broke within 2 months. Bought one as a gift for a friend and that one broke within the first week.

      • I have to agree but with different electrical app. I bought their cheap DVD players and after few weeks it refused to play any DVDs.

I rang them to get it repaired and they insisted me to provide them with the invoice (or more appropriately, shopping docket), although they know well that the item was only offered for sale few weeks back. I mostly threw away my groceries dockets … dooh..

        • I bought a DVD player from Aldi last year and it's still working well. It's luck of the draw I guess. Yes, got to remember to keep the receipt, I imagine most people would remember if it was bought from an electrical store.

          • @kcyw: Same, my 4 year old DivX dvd player from Aldi is still going strong. The $99 dvd-recorder I bought from Aldi earlier this year is easier to use and less choosy about DVD's than another $330 Samsung dvd-recorder I have. :-/

If you can't keep the box/packaging/receipt somewhere, maybe stickytape the receipt somewhere safe and out-of-sight on the product.

Aldi have a 60 money back policy. If it broke in the first week, you could have taken it back to the shop you purchased it from for a full refund.

        • Yes, if only they kept their receipt! Hopefully it was a lesson learnt - keep your receipts regardless of brand purchased!

I've never understood people like you.

I know someone that have gone and purchased a $3000 Bravia TV and it broke in a few weeks. I know someone that purchased a $1000 fridge and it broke in the first week.

Most of the people I know will say, don't buy XXX brand, I purchased one and it was CRAP and it BROKE!!!

If I listened to them there would be no more brands left. I don't understand why so many people think this way.

Some Aldi products haven't been the greatest, but you can say that about every single other brand.

I'm guessing i'm never going to buy anything Microsoft again because of how many Xbox 360's have died?

Its Aldi policy to need a receipt, why should someone be special?

And elcheapo, just so you know, I know someone that purchased a Panasonic DVD Player and it stopped reading discs after a month.

Why would Aldi sell a product that is dodgy with their return policy? Most people aren't stupid and keep the receipts for important items, or at least if they throw it out they don't blame the store.

      • About 2 years ago we bought a Sharp Sensor Microwave, and it died a horrible death, but it had a few problems from day one like it would turn on if you pull the door open slightly (which is a bit dangerous), the light globe needed to be replaced avery 2 months. It finally died when it sparked like crazy where the electronics are (could see it through the vents, and made loud noises).

Our Simpson hot plate top, went mad as well after one year of usage, one of the hot plates would turn itself on, even when it was switched off.

Hot damn that's cheap. Anyone in the market for a microwave wouldn't hesitate, what with a 2yr warranty too.

BUT, saying that, since getting a Panasonic Inverter microwave, I will always get an inverter model. When 50% power is truly 50% power (and not on then off then on then off to get "50%") it makes a major difference to reheating and/or defrosting.

Great price…..wife went and purchased the Toaster Oven from there this morning for $29.99 that was in the same catalogue.

    • Is that a good price? I have no idea really… I saw it when I was grabbing the microwave, but I didn't bother getting a trolley so that's all I could carry! :)

      • Better than anywhere else we have seen and we've been looking for a while.

  • Is a convection oven really better then a regular oven? I've never used one but tempting. Need to fit out a new kitchen.

    • Not really…. I wanted one as a supplement to my main oven. I'm building a new house, and in those el-cheapo places, they fit tiny little ovens. So I wanted a convection microwave to complement the oven in cases of emergencies.

Plus, my current microwave is a tiny 17L model. Even if this Aldi one lasts only two years, that's still pretty good value.

It's only a bargain if it cooks well and functions reliably in the long term. The price ought to be cause for some reservation - convection microwaves typically cost 5 times as much.

    • Agreed…no +ve vote from me…

    • +1

Surely it must work as advertised otherwise you can return it within the 60 day/2yr period (as applicable). Minimal effort/risk? If they sold the same item for 5 times the price I wouldn't be happier as a consumer (it would only give some people psychological comfort)!

Other savvy manufacturers take advantage of this buying the same item OEM putting a $1 facade and 5c brand badge on it and selling it to people who like to part with more money for brand "value"…

      • I guess if you keep the receipt, you can use the 60 day money back policy. Anyone know though if you have to fork out for postage if it needs to be sent away for warranty?

    • +1

More like the price ought to be cause for some "celebration" - brand name convection microwaves have been overpriced for far too long! ;)

Seriously, it's not that hard to put a heating element and second fan in one of these things, it ain't rocket science! Read my post above on previous cheap models, this is nothing new! ;)

  • I must agree ALDI appliances are absolutely rubbish. I bought a cheap microwave last year it was $60 turns out that it takes 2-3 more times to cook the food than a well known brand. I can't pop my popcorn as it will burn it in the time it needs to pop it. Bloody crap!!!

    • +1

Well I'll let you all know later if it works or not… I know my current name brand microwave cooks a frozen meat pie in 5 minutes (as per the packet instructions). So let's see if this Aldi one can do the same…

EDIT - The Aldi one actually is more powerful than my brand name one (800W vs 900W)…

    • Did you read the specifications, what was the power rating? You can't compare a 700w cheapie to a 1000w brand name, that's not the brand making it faster, it's the specs! ;)

FWIW, I don't think Aldi branded appliances are any better or worse than others, it's all mass produced crap regardless of the brand name IMHO! That said, I don't buy anything from Aldi I can't afford to just throw in the bin if it stuffs up, it's a personal thing, and probably not reasonable, but some negative experiences with the Medion folks and Aldi management a few years back (certainly prior to their implementation of this new whizz-bang 60 day thing) has made me quite wary of Aldi in general! ;)

  • It's not as though brand names don't fail as well.

In my rental apartment there's an Electrolux Gallery microwave + convection oven + grill, which cost according to the receipt the landlord provided me over $1,000 two years ago. It's had to be repaired FIVE TIMES under warranty over the past two years because the electronics keep short-circuiting (the Electrolux technician said the entire unit would have been replaced if it weren't for the fact that the model is now discontinued and they don't have any replacement stock left).

I have an LG Microwave, with convection and grill. Which was bought overseas, and we have been using this since 2001. No issues whatsoever. The price, at that time hold your breath - $150, at that time.

I believe, we pay way too much for good here in Australia. So if someone sells at a value price, we suspect quality.

I have bought Aldi products previously, and have always found that they were better value for the money could buy at the time of purchase.

I also have tested their returns policy many times. I go and buy stuff and try it on at home. If is does not suit my purpose, I go and return on the next visit. I just get asked the docket and why am I returning (which would be to not sell something which is faulty). Once a store manager said to me that nothing which is returned goes back into sale straight back. They actually always mark a note on the product. So I guess, Aldi is serious about its returns and quality policy. Most big name stores I know would take the goods straight back to the shelf.

Although, lately Aldi goods have not been as competitive as they were previously.

About current sales at Aldi, picked up two formal trousers for $20 each. These are pretty good quality stuff and you can't get anything remotely close at that price.

Tricks of trade for shopping bargains at Aldi, visit them on Wednesday evenings, when sale starting Thu is displayed. Not much rush and you can have a pick of the offer. This is specially true, if you were to buy clothes. On weekend, some people go through the clothes without any regard to the fact that these goods are meant for sale.

    • But if you go the night before the sales start, do they actually sell the goods to you at that price?

In places like target, I know they certainly won't… the system still registers the higher price, and it only comes down in price on the day of the sale.

I realise that probably won't apply to Aldi as most of their major sale items are sent in just for that week's sale…

  • Damn, that's a cool looking microwave

  • +1

I bought the suit trousers on Wednesday night, which were to go on sale on Thu.

As these are not available regularly, probably they don't have the same pricing issues as may be target.

Aldi sells same stock at same prices, before or after the sale, probably cheaper after the sale week is over.

Other stores sell the same stock at different prices.

    So, that's an advantage.

I bought the aldi microwave a couple days ago. Straight out of the box and turned it on and it made a horrible vibration noise. Out with the screw driver and I tightened every srew and also found one of the clips holding the fan to the outside chassis was a bit dislodged, this was probably the problem. I fixed the fan clip and turned it back on and it worked a treat. One unusual thing about the microwave is that the fan stays on for a minute after the cooking has finished to cool down the microwave (maybe this is normal for convection microwaves?). I have tried the microwave and the convection and all works great (cooked two frozen chicken schnitzels in 25min). The beeping is nice and loud and when its done it sounds like a reversing truck! So hope i get 2 years of good use.

    • Yes, It's normal for convection microwave ovens (like "traditional" ovens) to keep the fan going to cool down the oven/enclosure.
