SYD TO LAX RETURN

I am looking at buying flights for 2015 during June. The price seems to be around the $1500. I am not experienced that much with buying flights so was wondering should I buy now, or if I hold out a deal will come along? Or is the price just going to rise for flights?

Thanks :)

  • what's the date that you're thinking of flying ? and how much ?

    • I'm looking roughly at leaving 8th of June and returning around the 25th of June. Dates are flexible

      • Can only find United for aroud 1500 and Qantas for 1800.

I remember they say something like 54 days prior to your flying date is the cheapest time to buy.

  • I reckon you'll see specials along the way. I flew mid august this year for 1250 return. (300 off with Air NZ)

But not sure if that's a low season or not for US

    • I saw a few deals pop up on here but they don't cater to my dates unfortunately, possibly because I am going in peak season? Just wondering if there are ever deals with flights in peak season?

You are right that June is a high season for flights to the US. If you are flexible with your dates could you leave on 31st May? The departure date is what sets the "season" for your trip so if you depart in May and return in June you still get the lower price. For example, on Virgin Australia it brings the price down to $1255 by departing on 31st May and returning 7th June.

that's some smart thinking!! I guess my plan now is to leave 31st of May :) I think I might wait out until January and look at the prices then and see if a deal comes up. If not I might just book it then >.< I hate playing the airlines guessing game!!

I followed Dongas advice last year.

Sector 1 (Syd - Bris) was June low season
        3 month "layover" in Brisbane
        Sector 2 (Bris-LAX) in September
        and return LAX-Bris

Got a cheap OW to Sydney from Brisbane to catch Sector 1

        PM Donga for details

MITM, I had a look at that strategy again but it appears to have been changed and doesn't work at the moment.

worked for me and the dollar was great. Best trip yet. Thanks Donga.

  • I went on Fiji Airways via Suva and spent $1100 return

  • you could try the sneaky SYD->LAX->SYD->AUK booking with a final 'stopover' in sydney (and then not catch the syd->auk flight)

last time i looked this saved a few hundred off the round trip on 'Delta'

I tried that too but the SYD-LAX-SYD fare is already too low compared to the SYD-LAX-SYD-AKL fare to get any benefit out of it. Might be worth trying with Qantas though as I only tried it on Virgin.

But ensure your checked baggage isn't going all the way to AUK.

thats why you book it with a day or 2 stopover in sydney

  • so far the 31st of May Sydney return to LAX with Virgin Australia is ~$1250. Seems like a decent price I believe, or should I hold out?

The specials that come up during the year are usually around $1100 for direct flights. You might be able to get something a little cheaper by flying via Fiji or NZ, they have been around $800-$1000 this year.

I guess it depends how flexible your dates are. If you need to go close to the beginning of June I would book it now for $1250. If you are flexible enough to fly a month or two either side you could probably get a slightly better price later in the year.

I more or so need to be there in June sometime. I have an event on in Vegas mid June so no earlier than May 31st and would need to be back some time end of June, early July. So flexible with a few days but not by months

I'm holding out for a flight in May 2015 at the sub-$1000 airfares we saw from Air NZ for the same time this year!

    • Given the Oz dollar is glancing at the moment (compared to US dollar) then I can't see the airlines having increased travel demand to the US, so that strategy might work well.

Gone are the joys of buying stuff in the US knowing that the price you saw on the ticket was the same net price in $A.

$US1 with tax and conversion fee being $US1.08 and our exchange rate was $A1=$US1.08+

i went to the US when it was $1.08. it was magical, like a fairytale :D

from someone who is going there in Feb, hoping the dollar is still above 80c by then…I hate you ;)

    • I saw this but the travel dates I want aren't for Sydney, they do apply for Brisbane but a return flight to brisbane is about $150 so would be saving $50-100. Not really worth flying to Brisbane to save $100 max in my opinion lol.

Shame the travel dates weren't the other way around!
