Yes and no. The lids become loose really quickly. If you want them to sit still in a freezer and intend using the food before it gets freezer burn, sure. But if you want to use them to carry food say in your car to someone else's place - expect it to leak.

  • I'm looking for the small round (one-cup) container. Anyone know where I can find them? Coles don't seem to have them.

    • You can find it here but it's not on sale at this time: http://www.shopworldkitchen.com.au/brand/pyrex/glass-storage…

      • Thanks! i find it difficult to buy Pyrex when not on special.

    • Glasslock seem to do a variety of sizes. Can't say they fit the Ozbargain criteria of value/cheapness but dang if they aren't well-made.

(True) airtight - I use mine to keep the small portions of garlic and onions that I've minced, for the fridge.

Do they sell the plastic lids separately? I got a couple of these Pyrex containers at home that are missing lids…

    • I vaguely remember speaking to them on the phone, and I think you can buy them.

  • 30% at timemachines.com. use code 30OFF

  • didn't know they sold swag at coles..

Just so people know, 'new' Pyrex-ware made after 1998 is not the same as the old Pyrex that was made of borosilicate glass and would not crack/explode under heat. New pyrex can't be used in extreme heat conditions where the glass will have different levels of heat. I.e. melting butter in the microwave, cooking roasts in the oven.

The Pyrex brand was sold by Corning in 1998, before then it was the same grade glass as what was used in Laboratory equipment. The new company (World Kitchen LLC) makes Pyrex branded glassware out of toughened glass, which is a completely different composition to borosilicate glass can and will explode in your oven/microwave. They even have warnings on the labels now not to use it in the oven/extreme heat situations.

I know this one from experience after using one as a baking dish and it exploding in our oven.

Thanks for that Bon. It explains what I've seen in recent years.

Wish I could post photos in this thread a-la-message boards. Cuz if I could…I would have responded with THIS

      • Haha, yes I wear my 'Science rules!" t-shirt proudly.

    • I use mine in the microwave to melt butter no issues

      • You might not have any issues, but you're playing with the laws of thermal expansion. The superheated butter will cause the glass at the bottom of the bowl to expand at an uneven rate compared to the top of the bowl. Toughened/tempered glass is annealed which makes it super strong, however has a super high surface tension.

Unlike regular, untempered glass, it won't just crack, but will violently explode. The same thing happens to the windows of cars on super hot days. The only difference being is that the glass on a car is safety glass which is layered with a polymer so that it does not explode everywhere, just turns into little 'pebbles'.

        • We bought some a few years ago now and it said on the packaging/pamphlets microwaving and normal ovens was fine!?

        • Google "Exploding Pyrex" and look under images.

          Here's one report: http://www.saferproducts.gov/ViewIncident/1286003

If they were melting butter in the mixing bowls that's fine because they're still made of borosilicate glass.

It's just not completely obvious that there is a difference between PYREX (borosilicate glass) and pyrex (soda-like glass).

  • Good price for these. Used them over the years but the lids made me look elsewhere. Now I would recommend Snapware Total Solution Pyrex glass containers.
    http://www.amazon.com/Snapware-Total-Solution-Keeper-Featuri…
About $40 for 9 containers at Costco. (single sizes are also available at local home ware stores. The glass container are oven proof, nest, and are quite durable (have accidentally dropped a few times without damage).
The real positive is the lids. Great quality, leak proof, dishwasher safe. They come with warranty which I assume works locally thru Costco but I haven't had to test that.

    What no time machine?

The starch from my rice sticks to it like concrete.

    Bad product.

    • I've never had a problem with it with rice - using them to cook rice or otherwise.
