Qantas Store hahahahahaha wow.

Just had my first experience redeeming points through the Qantas Store. They had a deal on $100 David Jones eGift cards so I ordered 5 ($500 worth).

They locked my account and sent me a very vague e-mail with no instructions simply saying "Thank you for contacting the Qantas Store

So that we’re able to assist with your query, could you please reply with your membership number or order number and include the reference number of this correspondence."

What query? Contacting the store? I placed an order!

Anyway, left it for a couple of days and then decided to call them. They said "all we needed to was to make sure the order was legit." Serious? It's $500.. not a freaking flight around the world! Do they suspend all accounts that place orders of this amount?

I know it's better to be safe than sorry, etc, but the gift cards are being sent to the e-mail address used to sign up to the account, so I don't really see how the order couldn't be legit unless someone stole my email, password, frequent flyer number, and pin, and thought HEY let's redeem this guy's points for David Jones gift cards! lol

such wow.

what was the deal on gift cards?

  • seems a bit odd to cancel the account, a simple phone call would have sufficed

Wow, because security is a bad thing right?

Wow, because giving them a call takes out so much of your time that it's a hassle?

Seriously, I don't see the "wow" in this. Whether they did the right thing or not, I don't know, but it sounds perfectly reasonable, they froze your account and sent you an email asking you to contact them. That sounds perfectly fine by me and would have taken you a maximum of 10 minutes to sort out there and then.

People complain when they get their identity stolen and they lose their money through fraud.

People complain when they have to face security measures to stop those things from happening.

    What the hell, right?

I don't really see how the order couldn't be legit unless someone stole my email, password, frequent flyer number, and pin, and thought HEY let's redeem this guy's points for David Jones gift cards! lol

Also, if you thought about it for a second, gift cards are about the best thing to buy if you got someone's details. If you have their email account details as well, you could get the gift cards, quickly rush off to DJs, buy a crap tonne of stuff and get out. Perfectly untraceable.

Buying anything else would get it shipped to your address, stupid thing for a thief to do.

Buying plane tickets would get put under your name, equally stupid thing to do.

Thus, it doesn't take a genius to figure out that gift cards are the most risky purchase and is what a fraudster would most likely purchase, $500 in gift cards is a lot. Perfectly reasonable of them to check up.

I say good on them for being vigilant and alert. I bet you wouldn't be complaining if they managed to catch a fraudster would you? It goes both ways, you pay the price of inconvenience for security.

    • hey paulsterio maybe if they contacted me more directly I wouldn't have minded, but a vague e-mail and suspending my account isn't what I was expecting to happen when I placed an order. I'm pretty sure they'd have a contact number of mine on file somewhere.

Completely agree, there's always places where improvement is required, but even in this situation, I don't see any "wow" in it at all. It's a relatively small issue.

relatively to other things in the world/my life, yes. but relative to me accessing my QFF points and redeeming an award, it's a pretty major issue!

    edit

Note there are two types of gift card,

    an

A gift card, which i assume they send to you, special 14000 for $100
    And a Egift card 13300 for $100

They probably emailed because no one uses this option, worse option available in terms of what you get back.

Its why didn't transfer my main credit card to QFF, as I get better value gift cards with that
