Spilled Mango Juice on My Keyboard

Mistakes do happen :(

mango juice spilled on my keyboard (Microsoft comfort curve 3000).

Managed to clean it with wet tissue on top, but a day later most of the keys are sticky.. :(

I feel Ozbargain community helpful..Any tips to get it into normal working condition.

I do know there will be some funny comments on this post.. its okay :) we can have a laugh :)

  • Use a Keycap remover. Remove all keys. Soak in warm water and dish soap. Good as new.

Make one from paper clip or buy a keycap puller from ebay.

And you're lucky it's only a crappy $29 dollar keyboard, you will be more distressed if it was a nice backlit mechanical KB that cost you $150.

    • Oh just to add to this, I am not sure about your keyboard, but my membrane keyboard had the non-electronics bits, like the top body with all the keycaps attached it screwed to the electronics bits.

So I was able to remove the keycaps and the top bit by unscrewing it, didn't even have to worry about detaching and reattaching the keycaps. Just in case your keyboard is like that, why don't you check?

  • The juice probably got into the stalks.

In desperation it is said to possible to clean electronics by washing in distilled water and thoroughly drying it out before using. With no power applied and batteries taken out of course. Never tried it myself though. Take pictures and post to a blog if you get this to work. :)

    Stalks? This aint mechanical.
Keycap removal tool? once again, not mechanical. Pry those guys with a dinner fork.

You don't want any soap in the water as it will be a residue when the water dries out.

Go and buy a 1L bottle of isoproyl Alcohol from Bunnings, and wash the entire board out with that.

If you dont think its enough, mix it 50\50 with water but make sure to allow PLENTY of dry time.
If you're feeling cheap, metho should work too.

Really though, for a $19 keyboard, to the shops you go!

It's a $30 keyboard…. the time taken to dismantle the keyboard and clean with alcohol will be more than just getting a new one.

  • Thank you Guys !!

if i consolidate every valuable comment looks like it is easy to buy new keyboard :)

Ahhhh This is why i like Ozbargain :)

  • turn it upside down, use a hose to shoot water up into the keys, let it dry thoroughly for a couple of days

I have a mate who has been doing the dishwasher routine for about 5 years now on his keyboard (same one). He throws it in every 3-4 months (with a load of dishes - ew) and then when it comes out, gives it a quick rinse in the shower with him, then as he gets out, gives it a quick wipe with a towel, then sprays the keys with a metho/distilled water mix to help dry it faster, leaves it outside to dry, then off he goes.

I gave up trying to say the dishwashing powder would destroy it 2 years ago when I realised he a) didn't care and b) it was still going and I'd replaced my same Logitech keyboard in that time.

  • lightly dampened cotton buds - works well for spilled coffee so will probably be okay for mango juice, too :)
