  • Epping - no changing trains for wife, within striking distance of Parra region.

check train/bus routes into Maq park area. Changing trains can be annoying to some.

    • thanks battler

my budget is around $400 - $500 a week . This is scale from perfect - Damn!!

so $400 being perfect and $500 being Damn!!

2 bed with carpark a must

how does Epping fare with these parameters ?

  • whats ur budget
    house, apartment?

    • my budget is around $400 - $500 a week . This is scale from perfect - Damn!!

so $400 being perfect and $500 being Damn!!

2 bed with carpark a must

      house apartment doesn't matter

  • Blacktown has buses that go directly to Macquarie center, this takes a 45mins maybe more. It is also close to Greystanes, I'd say about 15mins or less drive time.

I have experience with Blacktown because I currently work in Wetherill Park, went to Mac U, and live in Glenwood but have caught plenty of buses from Blacktown to Uni in my days.

Epping, as battler suggested, is quite close to Macquarie park and shouldn't take more then 30mins by bus (I'm not sure exactly how long, would suggest using Transport info to check first). However, getting to Greystanes will take around 45mins or more depending on traffic.

My previous workmate lives in Epping and her commute via car took her an hour. (Again, I work at Wetherill Park, not exactly greystanes but really close.

    • thanks Project Zero

how is Blacktown in terms of people etc i have heard that its kind of a hole

      • lol, I've lived there for more then 14 years… yeah there are bogans and lads… but generally It's not as bad as some of the things I've heard.

Having said that, I may be desensitised having lived in the area for so long. I'm not a really reliable source of info as there is a kind of conflict of interest since I own a property in Blacktown… I highly recommend asking checking out other suggestions, maybe find some suburb reviews.

I will have to say this though, I can't believe Blacktown has NBN and my area doesn't…

OP is coming from Newcastle… arguably similar ;)

        • @battler:

Never been to Newcastle, can't really judge =)

        • @ProjectZero:

Its similar to blacktown, just less people packed into a larger area

        • @wholesaleturbos:

So there are great surf beaches, lakes and a harbour in Blacktown? I look forward to visiting soon…hope I'm not disappointed!

        • @Cheap Steve:

Much closer then it would be to access from Cessnock, which is classed as Newcastle still

Why not Macquarie Park? Domain search, 2 bedroom 1 park $400- $500, produces quite a few possibilities. Wife could walk to work- how refreshing- leaving you with hellish M2 peak hour traffic. Maybe it's better going west in the morning and east in the afternoon. Maybe you don't need to travel in peak hours.

    • Thanks Shaybisc

Actually this makes sense considering wife did the daily commute from newcastle to sydney for 6 months.

Walking to work for her will be a refreshing change

  • Parramatta area is more central for both destinations

    • Parramatta is more towards the "DAMN!" side of the scale in terms of rent at roughly $500 per week.

Though I did see one for $400… http://www.realestate.com.au/rent/with-2-bedrooms-in-parrama…

    • but Parra to Maq park on public transport = painful

      • +2

The 545 right? Been on it once… never again…

        • yep, stops every 100 metres over a 15km journey. Would rather walk next time.

OP (kkoc3) - Maq park is quite difficult to get to directly.
put a lot of consideration into your wife's travel options.

        • @battler:

          thanks battler

          much appreciated

          @battler:

I second what battler said..Maq park is quite difficult to get to directly.

I work at Mac park.. It can be frustrating to get to.. Trains from west need to change at Strathfield then again at Epping and sometimes connecting trains are only given 5 mins to change platforms. It sounds like a lot of time but not when you have to go through 2 long escalators to get the other platform, its a rush.

I personally have never managed to get on the connecting train on the way back. Everytime you miss it, its a 10+ min wait and the express train from Epping to Strathfield is crazy packed during peak hours.

yeah I have heard 545 is also fairly rough in regards to the people who catch it and had friends who refused to ever catch it again.

Even if you drive, some parts of Mac park are a nightmare during peak hours as everyone is trying to getting to get to the freeway creating a bottleneck.

just my 2 cent, hope this helps

  • Macquarie Park is a shocker to get to by public transport, as others have noted. The only relatively fast, direct service I can find is the Blacktown to MP bus- route 611. So maybe you could look for places along that route- Seven Hills: Baulkham Hills: North Rocks: West Pennant Hills.

    http://www.cdcbus.com.au/IgnitionSuite/uploads/docs/611-630_…

    • The 611 has one down side… If it hasn't changed since i used to ride it… it only comes once an hour… miss it and you're screwed…

  • I think Mac park/Marsfield would suit you best. Apart from a few 2 bedder units which go over 500, you can easily get something around 450 mark. Your wife would be able to walk to work or take the bus.

P.S. I live in Macquarie park. let me know if you need any help. :)

      thanks zerocritical

Mac park and Marsfield sounds really interesting

      thanks for offering help

  • 2 bedroom with car spot, $400 a week, you're scraping the bottom of the barrel, extend your budget to $600 to get something decent otherwise you'll be staying in lalor park with all the housos

    • I know for a fact you can rent 2bedder with a car spot in blacktown for ~$400… and macq park for up to $500…

Not too sure why you pulled $600 from… but those two areas would be good for OP.

      • -1

lol blacktown.. the slum of sydney..

        • Your point would be? Are you telling the OP to live in the city perhaps?

P.S. if Blacktown isn't recommended, there is always Macq Park, or are you going to say that's a slum as well?

        • @ProjectZero: Not at all. Macq Park is quite nice actually, not really a suburb, sorta like Rhodes lol

        • @eXtremist:

Exactly, so why would you say you need a $600 per week is what I'm trying to get at. There are plenty of places that would be in the OP's budget.

Don't give OP false information if you're not going to help.

  • I live in Macquarie Park. currently renting 2 br apartment right across Mac uni station for $450.
I love it here, public transport are plenty & so close to Mac Centre which has recently becomes 'cool' I think your wife will love it here.
there's a lot of new apartments in Macquarie Park, and if you want to live in a nice new ones you will have to fork out $600 ish for a 2 br ($500 for 1 br). There's a lot of older apartments in the area, they are good value if you can find nice/newly renovated one. If you see anything <$450 for 2 br then they are probably either further from station or they are old apartments with gross carpets (there's lots of those)
You should look into Marsfield as well. There should be some townhouses under $500 pw there. Very nice quiet neighborhood.
In re of people who live here.. they are mostly students or young professionals. I think the area is safe & I never feel unsafe walking around here.

FYI I lived in Glenwood & worked in Blacktown when I was at uni (Mac Uni). I think Macquarie Park > Blacktown :)

    • thanks blobber head

      Valuable insight

      Maresfield certainly ticks boxes

  • +1

try meadowbank. close to the parra river for a bit of a stroll, and reasonably new apartments. might be more in the 'damn' category though.

I lived there for a few years before relocating back to Melbourne, and it was a perfect position to catch a bus to Macquarie. Ferry just down the road to have a nice trip into the city, or train line can get you there a bit quicker.

    • Good suggestion, Meadowbank and West Ryde will get you within your budget and pretty decent locations.

I live in Gladesville (close to Meadowbank), I work in Macquarie Park and my fiance lives near Greystanes so I pretty much travel similar routes to what you and your partner will be doing.

Should be like 30 mins total from Meadowbank Station to Macquarie Park (train to Epping and then bus) and depending on what time you leave, it'll literally take you 20 minutes in the car from Meadowbank to Greystanes in no traffic conditions and more like 40-50 in peak hour.

I believe these locations will give you a better balance, living in Macquarie Park/Marsfield will make it a little bit more painful to get across to Greystanes.

      • My wife drives between Macquarie Park and north Ryde. Though it's just 3 kms, it takes her 30-40 mins to cover that route during peak hours. I'd imagine meadowbank to Mac park would be worse during peak hours.

        • Meadowbank to Macquarie Park isn't so bad if you go backroads and sounds like she'd be using public transport anyways.
Takes me 20 mins from Gladesville in peak hour

  • I have a duplex thats empty at the moment in Enfield.

  • Try Auburn Warwick Farm or Bankstown best suburbs in Sydney
