Vivitar S1527 16.1MP Camera - $20 @ Big W

440

Been searching for a cheap but decent digital camera for the kids for a long time now, and after throwing out a few which were absolute rubbish (including a $10 Polaroid branded one from Dick Smith), I came across this bargain of a camera.

You are probably like me and never heard of Vivitar brand before, but I took a gamble and bought one of these for the kids to play with, to my surprise this $20 camera was almost up to par with my old branded 8MP point-and-shoot camera.

It has all the standard feature you would expect from a more expensive point-and-shoot camera, a 3" preview screen, 720p video, face detection, HDMI output, burst shots and even facebook tagging and other social feature. (haven't figured them out yet). But what I was most impressed was the quality of the photos for this price! I have uploaded a sample which I took in my garden (photo resized to 50% of original).

So if you are looking for a cheap but decent camera for the kids to play with, I would recommend this, but I would suggest that it be better suited for 6yrs+ since it weights a little bit more than your standard point-and-shoot ones although a shoulder strap is included in the box.

I bought the last one from Big W South Yarra.

  • wow how can this even be manufactured for $20? Nice find!

    • Probably can't be manufactured for that price, dumping stock and recouping some cash rather than have it take up storage space.

      Amazing really.

I'm pretty sure batteries won't be an issue for most of us here.

    • Time to put those extra eneloops to work. And an excuse to get even more eneloops ha ha ha

Something tells me they won't have much trouble getting rid of these. Finding one will be the likely problem.

      • Bargain price but yeah I could not find it on their website so unlisted clearance item may be troublesome to track down stock.

    • So figure on this camera being 3x the size and weight of a normal camera,

DOH. It's a "Bridge Camera" - specifically designed to be large, have a large lens (good light gathering = less noise) and to look just like a SLR.

    I like this post.

I have several vivitar lenses which are made by Kiron (for vivitar).

Slight disappointment. Not on the camera but don't know where I got the idea that you have a bikini lady in your garden.

who needs a camera if everyone has a mobile phone?

      Optical zoom.

    Nice bush.

  • great for trade in's

  • Wow. Great price. It looks like a knock-off of a Fujifilm bridge camera but at a fraction of the price and 15x zoom is nothing to scoff at. These bridge/super zooms are really falling in price, good thing I sold mine off recently after not using very much.

  • Rang Pagewood store on opening and the only Vivitar camera they have is a kid's one. Could be pretty old stock, not that it's bad just hard to locate. I'm giving up at this point unless anyone knows of a more convenient efficient way to search for stock?

  • Curious to know how these would fare in low(er) light.

Have outlayed a heap of cash for a photog for our wedding but still contemplating have a heap of digital cams scattered around the tables. These seem relatively cheap and I'd imagine would put a disposable to shame.

Hmmmm now to find 15+ of them! :p

To the phone comment - all well and good but you rarely get any of these photos back from guests, etc (in this instance).

Not to mention the quality would suck in comparison to a proper camera - especially at receptions which are (usually) at night time.

  • Vivitar is more known for their flashes.. I didn't know they had cameras, nice find!

  • Just to add on its specs which seems to be omitted, this camera has image stabilisation (referred to as anti-shake on their specs page) and its ISO sensitivity is: 100-400 according to B&H.

1 unit doesn't meet the requirements, but a good deal for the OP

  • Rang around in Brisbane no luck.

  • These things use to retail around 100 probably 2 years ago, The front of the lens use to fall off exposing all the elements.. which eventually also fall out.

  • Nothing on display at bigw Southland
