Barcelona to Milan over 12 days - travelling along Europe south coast

Hey everyone,

I'm currently looking at a trip arriving Barcelona 12:15pm Friday 16 January, and leaving Venice 3:25pm on Tuesday 27 January.

I have no experience with this part of Europe, so I was hoping people who know the area could suggest what cities along the coast to visit (predominantly in France), so I can build some sort of an itinerary.

We've never been to Barcelona or Venice before, so a day or two (or more) in each city would be ideal. The rest of the time is completely negotiable. Is it worth sidetracking up to Switzerland (Geneva)?

Also, would rail transport be the most efficient way around? If so, single tickets or are there economical passes around?

Thanks for any input! It's all valued greatly :)

  • Single train tickets are decently priced if you prebook.

When in Italy, go with Italo rail (http://www.italotreno.it/EN/Pages/default.aspx) rather than Trenitalia (huge delays & unannounced cancellations).

I would suggest 3 days in Barcelona and 2 days in Venice.

Do check out Montserrat while in Barcelona if you like a hike & beautiful views.

Try to arrive to Venice by rail. Very convenient. Train station is right on the main island.

  • I drove from Venice to Barcelona in October. Venice -yeah, max 2 days. Barcelona - I really enjoyed it -stayed 5 days. avoid Nice - it doesn't live up to its name. Monte Carlo is interesting for a visit - but just that. go inland and see the country side.

if you have time then go to Austria - some of the lowest alcohol taxes in Europe. 500ml can of beer for 45 eurocents

otherwise, have you thought about getting a ferry from Barcelona?
