Road Side Assistance & Car Insurance

Hi,

I'm new to Victoria.
I wonder whether I could have some advice on cheaper options re the following -

  1. Road side assistance

  2. Car insurance (mainly interested now is 3rd party property)

I couldn't find any good website online to compare available options for private cars.

Thank you.

    • Yes, I have looked at this one. Not sure though whether they cover all those economical providers from market.

  • Nothing beats RACV for road side assistance… Try calling few insurance company or get a quote online for car insurance..

    • Thanks ! It looks to me that RACV atleast for new members is relatively expensive.

  • Plenty of motor vehicle insurers here…

    Free online quotes too.

      Thank you.

  • racv for both and you will get a discount, also change your insurance on the car rego to Racv and you get a discount as well.

    • Sorry, I am not very clear what you meant by ".. also Change your insurance on the car rego to Racv".
You are asking to consider racv to combine roadside assistance and insurance. However, I didn't follow the last (above given) part of your comment.

I think he means that if you elect racv to be your compulsory third party insurer (what do they call it down there in mexico again??) its the insurance that is tied in with your registration, it is to cover personal injury to others.. with your racv comprehensive policy you may get a cheaper rate.

My understanding was that in VIC, Compulsory third party insurance (CTP) or ‘greenslip’ is included in the car's registration fees. One can not choose the provider unlike a person from QLD or NSW where they can choose a CTP provider. Please correct me, if wrong.

        • @Aimanu:
I am in qld and can choose I assumed Victoria would be the same.

          @Aimanu:

Yes, you are correct. CTP is included in your rego payment. So in effect, your only choice of insurer for CTP, is VICROADS.

        • @she_spools_180: Thank you.

  • Road Side Assistance - keep a spare tyre, jack, and jumper cables in your car. Save your money.

Insurance - A must-have. Prices vary depending on your personal circumstances so no insurer is always cheapest. Try Woolworth's insurance though as they have been cheapest or close to it for a few different searches I have done.

      Thank you !

    • IMO, saving money on road side assistance isn't the best thing to do.

It helps so much especially when you have an old car. I was in melb before and I'm with NRMA, I left my key in the boot and called up RACV and they got the key for me (free of charge). U won't be able to do that urself. Also my car broke down once and it was towed away, thank god road assistance provides free towing service if it's within 25kms or something like that.

Don't save ur money on road assistance service=].

      • Appreciate for sharing your thoughts and experience.

  • Road side assistance is expensive. It is up to the driver.
    Why you should have it…

    1. If you don't have a spare key hidden under your car.
    2. If you don't maintain your car.
    3. If you don't carry tools, a jack or a spare tyre.
    4. If you have an older car and have limited mechanical knowledge.
