Apple MacBook Air (Late 2008) 1.86GHz w/ 128GB SSD $1899 - BuyMac.com.au

190

buymac.com.au currently has two previous model (Late 2008) MacBook Air ultrathin notebooks on clearance, with free shipping included.

Edit (+3 hours): Updated the link. Looks like the $1,649 model has sold out — congrats whoever managed to buy one — but the $1,899 appears to still have stock.

$1,649 MB543X/A-CTO 1.6GHz Core 2 Duo, 2GB DDR3 SDRAM, GeForce 9400M, 128GB SSD (Solid State Drive)
$1,899 MB940X/A 1.86GHz Core 2 Duo, other specs same as above

They also have the MacBook Air SuperDrive on clearance for $99. The $1,649 unit appears to be "CTO", meaning that Apple upgraded the drive to a SSD (which was a very expensive option when these were released — I remember the upgrade costing $1,300 for my MacBook Pro last year!)

The internals of these two models are identical to the current generation (well, except that the 1.6GHz variant is no longer offered), and Apple even uses the same Model Identifier ("MacBookAir2,1") for the Late 2008 and Mid 2009 models. Since both of them include the 128GB SSD, I think they are a much better buy than the current $2,399 base model that comes with a SATA HD.

Mod - marked as expired.
OP - unmarked as expired and title edited (see comment) :P

very good price for air with ssd:)

  • why is it so cheap? discontinued model?

Yeah, as I stated in the original post — these are the models released in November 2008 and "discontinued" in June 2009. However, even though they are discontinued they are almost identical on the inside (and outside!) to the current models. Why so cheap? I guess the retailer is just trying to clear their stock. :)

  • I would buy it just to play with but I've bought both the COTD laptops from the last two days and there goes all my dinero T_T

Sensational price for a SSD Air. Would still have 12 months factory warranty and be eligible for AppleCare. Great alternative for a netbook for those who want something light and portable without sacrificing screen size.
    +1 from me.

    • Yup, buymac.com.au are an Apple Authorised Retailer, so you're getting a full warranty from your date of purchase. (You're not guaranteed of getting a full warranty if you buy off a "non-authorised" dealer, such as on eBay, I think.) You're also eligible for a discounted upgrade to Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard: http://www.apple.com/au/macosx/uptodate/

i am using the 1.86ghz model myself, it's truly an amazing thing.
it's the weight of a netbook, with a screen size of a notebook and can still borrow someone else's dvd drive wirelessly
the ram it uses is 1066mhz, ssd just tops up the speed, so it runs really fast.
    love it.
recommend anyone who wants a much more powerful machine than netbook to buy.
    a very good price too.

  • link is down. Guess the sale is over?

    • Looks like the $1,649 model has been sold (their website stated that there was only 1 left in stock when I posted the bargain) — I've updated the link to the $1,899 model (which is still a very good deal).

      • Yes, they ran out of the 1.6 but are still offering good deals on the 1.83.

Thanks to the courteous staff at buymac / palaeographics. :)

  • To the mod who marked this offer as expired (and others who may still be interested): It appears the 1.86GHz/$1,899 model is still for sale; I think only the 1.6GHz model has "expired"/sold out, but I could be wrong (anyone rang them up?). :)

That's correct as of 2.54PM yesterday, when the 1.6 ran out.

Incredible deals on the 1.8 if there are any left. :)

  • jump22….you are a fcking champion i was jsut about to purchase the one off the apple website for $2799 and then i saw this….you just saved me $1000….thats an OZBARGAIN!!! well played!

    • Very happy to help! Did you get the 1.6 or 1.86? Both of them are a much better buy than $2,799 for the 2.13 model. The discontinued 1.86/SSD was even said to be faster than the new top-of-the-line MBA in this review: http://www.macworld.com/article/141296/2009/06/macbook_air_m…

What’s weird about the new high-end MacBook Air model is that although it cost dramatically less than its immediate predecessor, it was also slower than that model. The late-2008 1.86GHz MacBook Air was faster than the new top-of-the-line model in 11 of our 18 tests, and as a result, the old system’s final Speedmark score was slightly higher.

(This may no longer be the case — I wouldn't be surprised if Apple has fixed the new model's speed issues with a software update — but nonetheless I doubt there's much difference in performance between the two.)
