Dirty Dancing (Sydney Lyrics Theatre) - discount?

I wanted to buy some tickets for my wife and visiting parents (as Christmas present), but even with only half decent seats they are $120 each or $480 for 4! Seems very excessive for a 2 hour theatre show and I'm finding it very hard to justify. But I do believe my wife would love it and going to the theatre is not something we normally (ever) do.

I've searched high and low for a discount with no luck. I did find that NRMA had a "25%+" discount, which I was very excited about, but it required a membership to even view. Luckily I didn't sign up for cheapest membership just to access this since it turned out that it was only available for 4 specific days - in February! And even then, each show only had like 5 available seats.

Anyway, is there any other promotions whatsoever for this show that I can take advantage of? Is it common for these things to go on sale? Like I said, it's not something we usually attend. I'm worried about waiting too long to as the only suitable day for us to go already has a lot of seats unavailable.

Thank you

  • Unfortunately your chances of finding Dirty Dancing tickets on sale are quite slim…as you said so yourself, a lot of the shows are close to capacity and given that the run has only just started, I don't think you'll be able to find discount tickets for shows during the Christmas period.

Have you considered tickets to Wicked instead? Brilliant musical, a much higher quality production than Dirty Dancing and there are $70 ticket deals going at the moment. Or there are also discount tickets to Cirque du Soleil's Totum which should also be quite entertaining!

    • Agree with princess peach that it'll be terribly unlikely that tickets for Dirty Dancing will be discounted this early in the season. Maybe try to see if anyone are selling unwanted tickets on Gumtree, etc?

I personally found Cirque du Soleil's Totum to be quite boring (quick slow and lack of "wow" factors - only a few acts were at the stadard one would expect of Cirque du Soleil).

If the London performance of Wicked is anything to go by, it's quite slow in the first half (before the intermission) but the second half of the performance gets much more entertaining.

    • I originally looked at cirque du soleil, but couldn't find any discounted ticket for the days we were in Sydney (beginning of jan, all discounts ended in December). When I realized there was a dirty dancing show though, i stopped looking. She loves dirty dancing, and even though she would like the former too, I think she will like this more.

Second hand tickets is also too hard as we need 4 seats and very specific day (we are only on Sydney for a few days).

Wicked is a good idea, but if we go to that she will realize dirty dancing also has a play and it will take away from wicked because that would be the one she really wanted to watch.

Edit: I might keep looking for cirque du soleil too if I can get a good price. At least it won't be near theater so she would hopefully not hear about the other show.

      • Capital Theatre (for Wicked) isn't that close to The Star (for Dirty Dancing) so it's not like you'll need to walk pass one to get to the other.

        • Ah, ok, I thought it was playing in the same place. I've been to neither. Thanks

        • Actually, the $70 offer seems to be finished either way I think.

  • I just got tickets for my mum for Christmas yesterday as well. I was able to get 10% by firstly buying giftcards and then purchasing the tickets through Ticketmaster.

The $120 tickets were $90 if you had a concession pass…maybe your parents might be eligible for this?

PM if you need more details!

    • My parents are not Australian, so they wouldn't have the right identification either way unfortunately. Not sure how you got gift cards discounted, I might try and work on that angle.

  • Argh, every promotion for anything always end in December! Just noticed a new 30% off for cirque du soleil on lasttix that wasn't there last time I looked, but as usual only up until 31st of December, same as the NRMA discount etc. We will be in Sydney early January.

EDIT: to be more specific, the days we can attend is 4th, 5th and 6th of January. Of those days, both Cirque du Soleil and Dirty Dancing is only performing on the Sunday the 4th. Sundays are more expensive too. For example, the same seats which are $120 on Sunday is $86 with a "family" ticket on the the 7th (or any other weekday). This is without any external promotion or anything. Very unlucky with the days we have available.

    • Just keep an eye out. More discount tickets tend to become available as it gets closer to the date of the show.

  • Wicked, as mentioned above, does seem a lot better to be honest. If anyone knows any discount for this show instead, please let me know. Again, dates we are available is 4th to 6th of January.

I will of course keep an eye out as well. Found some discounted tickets, but again not for the right day.

  • We will be in Melbourne for a few days before Sydney, and I just realised Grease is playing there, another one of my wifes favourites. I'm getting myself more and more confused ;) Wicked seems to have the best reviews though. Decisions decisions.

So I guess if anyone has discounts to share for Dirty Dancing or Wicked in Sydney or Grease in Melbourne, please feel free to share. I know this isn't really the best place for a discussion about the shows themselves, but if you've been to these and want to make recommendations, that would also be appreciated.

    • I've seen Grease in Sydney and Wicked in London. Definitely prefer Grease to Wicked.

But then, with Grease only just starting its encore season in Melbourne, discounted tickets might be hard to come by.

      • After having a closer look yesterday, i decided that i will buy tickets to Grease tonight. Could get much more reasonable prices on the days we had available due to buying 4 (ie family price). Not the best seats perhaps, but sounds like it will still be ok. I'll update with details later.

I'm surprised you liked it more than wicked though. It seems like wicked has better reviews and a bit more interesting as I've heard the grease songs to death already :p but anyway, wife should love it.

With all the time I've spent looking at these things, I'm considering getting tickets for just me and wife to wicked as well, in addition to all of us going to grease. But we'll see.

        • I went to Wicked with 2 other friends and all 3 of us thought the first half was pretty slow and boring but we all enjoyed the second half.

With Grease, part of the attraction is that you know the songs and the story line so well. Unlike going to the movies, where you wanna be surprised, IMHO I think knowing the plot and songs are pluses when it comes to theatre/ musical. (A bit like going to a concert I guess. You wouldn't necessarily wanna go to a concert when you don't know any of the songs.)

        • @Love a bargain:
Thanks for the help. Got the Grease tickets for $76 each since they had family tickets for this session. Side seats, but should be ok. Total around $300 instead of almost $500 for Dirty Dancing, so definitely a lot more reasonable. Quite a few tickets left, so might have gone cheaper if I waited, but didn't want to risk it as it is Christmas presents.
