[POLL] Nexus 7 - How was your Android 5 Update? Any workarounds to Issues?

I say:

DON'T BE TOO QUICK TO UPGRADE (at least, an ASUS Nexus 7 (2012 ver)) to 5.x.x

I find it's too slow; you'll lose color & background config., & some apps break.

OK, apps can be updated (eg, CBC was quick to fix "CBC Radio" for 5.x.x), but who wants to be [effectively] "forced" to upgrade their hardware before they want to?

Look around, see if any others are "in pain" from their decision to move to 5.x.x

Even Mail's slowed down, possibly on 4.x.x systems, no less…

Google seems here to be acting like Apple, & I don't like it at all.

Tell you your experiences, below, but be sure to list your Hardware details.

  • I'm looking forward to Lollipop actually… Haven't tried it yet and the update comes out next year for my Z3. Hopefully all the bugs will have been fixed.

My colleague at work has exactly the same tablet as you and her's is much faster since the update. It's a bit of a pain to do but you might find that a lot of these issues go away if you back up your apps and data and perform a factory reset.

  • I upgraded my rooted nexus 4. No big issue. Everything works except my Audio Manager can't launch an App (but Audio Manager is so old). Other than that, it works fine.

  • Mine hasn't offered or pinged yet to say an upgrade is good to go.
I also won't play around with ROMs or rooting this time around, so I can wait.

  • Definitely makes nexus 7 (2012) slower, couldnt really fault it on nexus 5 or nexus 9.

Sorry have to add "Nexus 7" to the title. My dad has got my Nexus 7 2012 and he didn't even bother to upgrade to KitKat. For a few apps that he uses on the tablet I am not sure whether he would care.

No problem however with Lollipop on my Nexus 4. Need to get used to the new design, but everything feels smoother.

  • Running Android 5 on my Nexus 4 with no problems at all.

    • Ditto for my two Nexi.

  • Is downgrading an option once you've made the leap?

My 2012 Nexus 7 is damn slow after lollipop. Planning to put custom ROM.

    • Yeah, mine has slowed to a crawl - almost unusable! Apps keep crashing out, not responding, etc. I'm seriously considering doing a factory reset!

  • 5.0.1 is coming really soon!

  • Skype doesn't work for me on updated Nexus 5.

  • If I do install the upgrade (which I still have not been offered) on my 2012 7 I'll factory wipe it after to get a clean lollipop install. Seems people are finding this method better than an upgrade.

  • Was a bit sluggish after the update, but it has been sluggish for a while now. However, following these steps did seem to help a bit:

  • This Nexus 7, 2012 with KitKat 4.4.4 has been pretty much unusable for the last few weeks. Dog slow to do anything - like several seconds to switch Chrome tabs, second and a half to pull down the notification bar and about 5-10 seconds to show the home screen. Bringing up Google Now can take 20 seconds.

Maybe a total wipe and move to Lollipop will actually improve things!

    • I never really had those other problems but Chrome was always a bastard for me, even before KitKat. Lollipop didn't change anything but I also didn't try the hard reset, so your mileage may vary.

Rather than persevering, I ended up just giving in and buying a Galaxy Tab S when they were on sale over the weekend.

  • I dont like the new lockscreen, Dashclock Widget is so much better.
Im not sure whether smartlock isnt working, or I dont have the right boxes ticked. Even though Ive setted home as a trust location, it still asks me to swipe to unlock. Also dont like that they've disabled the ability to directly (1 step) toggle data on/off via the notification bar and via 3rd party apps like Notification toggle.

  • I've had endless problems on my N5 from Lollipop but on my N7 it has been fine

  • Scotty and others did you do something manual to update on Nexus 4?
I haven't received the OTA update on either my Nexus 4 or 7 (2014)
My nexus (2012) is running CM so not expecting anything there

    • Nex7 offered update OTA last night
Done and working well - not vastly different IMO but i like it
      Waiting on Nex4 now

  • I'll stick with CyanogenMod Kitkat snapshots
