VPS: 1GB RAM, 512MB VSWAP, 65GB Storage, 4 Cores, 1 Gbps Uplink - USD $21/Year ($63 OFF)

70
LEB21

TragicServers, contrary to their name, has a decent reputation for providing quality support. They've been around since 2012 or so and are a registered company in NY, USA.

  • 1GB RAM
  • 512MB vSwap
  • 4 CPU cores
  • 65GB HDD space
  • 2TB traffic
  • 1Gbps uplink
  • 1x IPv4
  • 3x IPv6
  • OpenVZ/SolusVM
  • $21/year, normal price is $84/year

This is enough to host your own VPN, IRC bouncer, a half dozen wordpress websites, and still have plenty of space left.

Servers are available in Dallas (Limestone networks QuadraNet) and in Los Angeles (Quadranet). Default config install allows for 32/64bit CentOS 5/6, Wheezy 7 and Ubuntu 12/14, but there is a greater range in the control panel afaik.

QuadraNet – Los Angeles, CA, USA
Test IPv4: 198.55.111.5

LimeStone Networks QuadraNet - Dallas, TX, USA
Test IPv4: 96.44.142.2

I was in the market for a VPS and found this. I bought a yearly subscription and can't complain so far. It was immediately set up after (PayPal) payment. If you have any specific server tests or something let me know and I can perform them.

  • Pretty good value, i have a couple of VPS's myself dotted across the globe. You can test out your disk speed with the following command:

    dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=16k conv=fdatasync

It will create a file called 'test' you can delete afterwards.

Otherwise you can run a speedtest using a python script too, but i dont have it on me.

We've been around since 2012 and not going anywhere :)

  • Bought one - I reckon even if it folds after 6 months, $21 isn't gonna break the bank

  • I'm not current with VPS prices. Is $84 annually the "normal" price for something of this spec?

    • +1

With the mainstream providers, such as DigitalOcean, something like this will cost about $15/month. With the smaller providers, their advertised rates are about $6-7/month (around $80 annually). The smaller ones do have plenty of coupons floating around which usually bring it to down to half price, though.

Nevertheless, you'd be hard-pressed to find anything like this for less than $1.75/month, which is the monthly price for this deal.

Not at all. Here's a similar one. And an even cheaper one if you don't need native IPv4. I've had a better one with WeLoveServers for a while, and it looks like they're offering it again. They crop up once a week or so.

That said, this particular deal for $21/year is quite good, and potentially beats their competition in a few areas. But certainly not worth $84/year.

Keep an eye out on http://lowendbox.com/ if you want.

      • Those are the discounted rates though, not the normal rates which he was asking about. In your first link, for example, without the discount its billed at $7 month. VPSCheap, without the discount, is actually the most expensive at $10/month and WeLoveServers is also $7/month.

        • I did say:

They crop up once a week or so.

If you keep checking LEB and related sites, you'll see similar rates a few times a month. It's not rare. Those prices may be "normal" for those providers, but they're certainly not what you'd go for if you're looking for a bargain with similar specs. Hardly anyone is in that much of a rush when looking to rent a server. The typical price with those specs is lower.

        • @elusive: I agree.

One thing to note though is that low end VPS aren't Eneloop and Chromecast — cheaper aren't necessarily better, even with the same amount of memory, disk space, allocated visual CPU cores, etc from two different providers.

In the Chicago VPS post I mentioned that I paid $25/year for a VZ VPS with 2.5GB guaranteed memory & 75GB disk space, and that thing was oversold to the max. Crawling when it's up with huge iowait, and most the time it's not accessible to due network constantly flooded.

But I guess if you are on LEB long enough you know all these already.

Edit: Not saying TragicServer is bad. I actually bought one last night and so far so good. Quadranet >> anything on ColoCrossing for me anyway.

        • Ah yea, no two providers are quite alike. Also have to consider quality of support and even location - US west coast gets better latency to Australia than east cost, for example. For the most part, you can get a pretty good idea of what they're like from reviews.

Also need to watch out for the ToS/AUP - most of these cheaper boxes have restrictions on usage, usually along the lines of not being allowed to max out your CPU allocation for more than short bursts. TragicServers:

Subscribers agree not to use more than .8 on the VPS extended periods or cause discruption on the hode node effecting other subscribers. High CPU usage and/or disruption may result in reboot, shutdown or suspension of your service.

Personally, I moved to a dedi a while ago. Costs much more, but I can do far more on it.

        • Funny enough, LEB is owned by ColoCrossing.

        • @ausmechkeyboards: I cringe whenever I think about that. Not even funny :(

    • Hi Roilan, do you guys allow PPTP servers to be installed in the Ubuntu machine? I want to basically setup a VPN for using Netflix.

      • While you wait for an official answer, this question was asked and answered on LowEndBox a fortnight ago:

k446804791: Do you allow custmers build PPTP VPN on your VPS?

        Roilan: Yes, we allow VPN.

        • Thanks thrift
