Recommendation for getting Ultrabook or Notebook

I'm looking to spend around $1000 for either an ultrabook or notebook and would like your advice on getting the best value for money on the market.
My main purpose for this is for surfing the net, streaming videos, ozbagaining, research, uni work and play 10 years old computer games.

I currently own a 2010 macbook pro model and its so frigging slow even though its an i7 , 4GB RAM, 500 HDD - it feels like a window 98 each time i load a page.

I'm not very familiar with the specs in computers such as what is consider a good graphic card, is SSD better than HDD, what is consider a good processor etc.

It will be great if you guys can give me some tips about it so when I do my independent research, I know what to look for.

Thanks guys in advance

  • I highly recommend Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus
Im currently using it now and it is very fast with stunning visuals.
Yes, it has 128GB SDD and fourth gen i5 core, which should be more than sufficient.
Can probably buy it from USA ebay for around that price.

    • THanks Fredonon, how much did you pay for your notebook?

      • I got a 6 month used one for 750 USD, shipping included.
I suggest looking on the US shippers, as there are many cheap, good new ones

just shove a 256g SSD in your current notebook and enjoy the new found power.
did it with my i5 lappy and she is all go again.

I second this. An SSD will do wonders in your system.

Agreed, reformat and install an SSD. If it is still running slow then something else is wrong with the laptop, but 99.9% of the time this is all you need.

    • thanks for the tip - are the SSD a one size fits all product or I gotta get some tech guy to put it in for me?

I'm not very good computers obviously o.o

      • Its not hard, but you can just get it done at a local tech shop.

Have you recently used your optical drive? If you don't really use it, you can actually replace your optical drive with an SSD and then you'll have the best of both worlds.

        YouTube has instructions
Google will also lead you to any how to's.
They are very simple to install, just remove the regular hdd and install the ssd.
        One size fits all.
