Any Suggestions on Reducing Cost of Split System Aircon Installation?

I am looking to purchase a 2.5 kw split system air conditioner. The shops that I asked quote 800 AUD for installation alone which is almost equal to cost of unit.

I was thinking I could mount the external and internal units myself to reduce the installation costs. Do i need to call a electrician and plumber separately to do the rest? Or can I get one person who can do it all?

How have others gone about installing?

  • Keep looking at installers.
If you look hard, you get can them installed for $500 including electric wiring and connecting it up to its own circuit.
I got two installer for $550 each and one installed for $500 later (lucky) soon after we built.

  • +1

$550 to $600 is normal for standard installs.

  • its around $600, check who is local to you on the site arctick (registered air con installers)
getting seperate trades will cost more and mess any future warranty as they will be all blaming each other.
$600 over the air con life isnt bad.

  • If it is easy access & virtually back to back ??? then tell the installer that and offer $500.
We had 2 installed that were a bit awkward and it was $900 total.
I would not try fitting the wall unit or compressor myself. Get an aircon tech to do it all.
Check your yellow pages for independent aircon repairers / installers. Busy time of the year for them so be prepared to wait a week or two.
Trying to save too hard on the install can come back and bite you. Most failures are caused by bad installs according to our tech.

  • Thanks guys for all you input.

  • Say, "happy to pay $500 when you happen to be in my area". As long as you are happy to be on call. Busiest time of year. Make sure they mount the remote on the wall instead of trying to skip out earlier. Mark up the srew holes for them near the room door.

  • when I got my 2 units installed it was cheap- the actual installation. however the cable from the external power supply (from the main lines) to the fuse box couldn't handle the pull of the units so that had to be changed and a new new fuse box put in (i live in a 1940's qld house -the wiring is ancient and crap).

just mentioning this as it could be a factor - depending on your house's wiring

  • having 2 units installed this week for $900(samsung). found the installer through serviceseeking.com.au, i did look at other installers in the area but it turned out that the initial installer quotes were the cheapest.
