Samsung Galaxy S5 or HTC One (M8) ?

Hi OzBargainers,

I'm planning to buy a new phone, either the S5 or the HTC One M8. I've always had a Samsung Galaxy and have enjoyed it. I've also flashed cyanogenmod onto the Galaxy when I had problems with touchwiz and have liked the rom.

I've looked at reviews and both have their pros and cons. So far this is what I've gotten from these reviews.

Samsung S5

  • Better Camera
  • Waterproof
  • Extra Features (eg.Heart Rate/ Fingerprint Scanner)

HTC One M8

  • Better External Design
  • Front Speakers
  • Better UI

Does anyone have any opinions with the phone?

Comments

  • Wait til the next iteration in March/April. My 2 cents.

  • LG G3 - Beats them both imo.

    • A mate of mine always has problems with his G3's battery, he says it hardly ever lasts a whole day! :(

Do you have the same issue?

      • I did initially when I was using 3G only in poor reception. I'd get 1-2hrs SoT at best.

Since moving to 4G (thus better reception) and Lollipop - I'm easily getting ~4hrs SoT which I know is nowhere near the Z3, but still ok.

For me the G3 has the best screen in a still manageable form factor. Nothing in particular stands out but the overall package is great. Cost too is lower these days than the other options.

  • +1

    1+1 if you liked CyanogenMod.

Rather the LG G3 or Xperia Z3 over them

  • Out of the choices you have given. I would go with the S5.

I was in exactly the same position as you a few months ago! Here are some thoughts for ya:

I ended up going with the HTC M8, because I figured if I'm spending all that money on a phone, I at least want it to look nice. It feels really solid in the hand, the metal feels a lot nicer than some of the more plastic-y phones out there.

The speakers are awesome. One of the main reasons I bought the phone! They go so loud that often I don't even need to turn them up to the max volume, which is rad.
Watching YouTube videos is really great, same goes for playing games. Not needing earbuds all the time is kinda liberating!

Battery life on this thing is consistently amazing. Coming from an iPhone 4S, it lasts noticeably longer. I rarely run out of charge before the end of the day, and when I do it's only because I was watching loads of 3G youtube vids or whatever.

I really like the waterproof thing, but I've never had a problem with water in the past, so not having it doesn't worry me as much as I thought it would.

I have mixed feelings about the camera.
The photos it takes are ok if all you're doing is looking at them on the phone screen, or putting them up on FB, but anywhere else they'll look like crap. The resolution of all the photos is super low (like 4MP), so zooming in at all isn't really flattering.
On the other hand, the low-light performance is great! The photos I take in bars or clubs etc. are definitely way more useable than those taken by any of my friends.
I guess the photos aren't a huge problem if you don't use the camera much, but I find it to be annoying, considering how happy I am with this phone in every other way!

The UI thing is important. I can't really stand Samsung's TouchWiz. HTC's UI is, by comparison, really clean. It's really easy to use and never gets frustrating or annoying like TW sometimes does.

I've had this phone for months now and I really like it. I'd definitely choose it again were I given the same choice!
The Sony Z3 that just came out seems incredible though, so I'd definitely factor that in if i was buying a new phone now!

I hope this helps! Lemme know if you have any probing questions! :P

  • I planning on going with the Samsung S5. I thought about getting the OnePlus One but I've read about many bugs in the UI. I found a deal at Telstra were you get a free Samsung Tab when you sign up for the Samsung S5 which is an extra.

  • I'd go with the GS5

  • If I trust your opininon then I would choose the S5 because I always worried about the camera and I love extra features, I don't mind of front speakers since I use hearphones or real HP when I am at home but I don't care about design and waterproof because I never had water matter.
